Are you guys really not expecting any lighting on this one? Would seem weird for such a prominent tower, but then again Chicago developers don't seem to put much (if any) stock into lighting their towers. This one is from a Chinese developer though, so who knows.

...is the framing that is going up above the concrete top adding to the official height of the building ?

...or was that always included in the total height ?

Not to put a damper on this - but form follows function.

Im assuming the blow through probably reduced the size of the slosh dampers needed, yes?

The addition of the blow through= function following form.

If you actually read about the engineering of this building the frustrums we're almost irrelevant structurally at the end of the day. They simply walked the regular columns in and out. The blow through us necessary because of how narrow and slablike the massing is. It has everything to do with how tall and slender the building is and nothing to with the form.

I didn't read about it. It just occurred to me as a type of "form follows function" as it seems the damper was not adequate, and so the blow through came as a necessary after thought. You said it... "it has everything to do with how tall and slender it is" ie..It's form...

The program of a building is not an element of it's form, it IS the function. If the building calls for 1.2 million SF to be built on this skinny of a lot with a street going through the middle of it, that's going to dominate the entire design. Yes, they could have made a shorter building with no blow thru, they also could have built two single family homes on each corner facing the park and not have even needed elevators... Are elevators now also "function following form"?
