I always considered Minny to be part of the US prairies personally.

Coming from a smaller city on the east coast of Canada (Halifax) which has been known for nimby backlashes against buildings 5 stories and up; these photos provide some excellent examples of what would be workable in Halifax (and not). Gives some good ideas to consider...
And, whether "we" like it or not, these continue to be the prominent form of urban renewal in the Twin Cities -- 4-6 stories, that is. They are starting to grow on me and CAN fit in a residential neighborhood that is normally zoned for 3 floors, max. Some of these pics are great examples of how they can fit in very nicely, and sometimes, very very poorly!

All and all this infill looks fantastic, including Le Parisien. I wish more cities were promoting this type of urban growth.

I have to disagree that development three blocks away "aren't near it at all".

I think the real trigger for the development of the Mill District was the money the city put into revitalizing the downtown riverfront. Converting the Stone Arch Bridge from an abandoned rail trestle into a pedestrian walkway, developing Mill Ruins park and the Mill City Museum and building the Guthrie were the things that made it a desirable location. Before those things happened there was nothing there.

Damn I'm so jealous, as a city that is a peer in metro population San Diego's infill is utter sh*t compared to this. Looks like our planners need to take a trip up there and see how its done.

It all has a very Pacific Northwest-vibe. But then again I sensed that when I last visited the city. It was like a blend between the Midwest and Northwest.

Hey, you don't have to cite the sources for all of the pictures if you're hosting them yourself on flickr, imageshack, etc.

If you use the share button on Flickr that is how it comes out. It is easier than grabbing the url of the individual photos. It is also how Flickr wants it done, they threatened to block linking to SSC because people wern't doing it that way.

I grew up in this apartment building in the late 70's and early 80's. It was a beautiful, old apartment building with a very rich history behind it. The basement had a sub-basement that housed a huge old brick Kewanee boiler. The front entryway had beautiful original carrerra marble in it - the closets in some of the apartment still had the windows in them from the old days when people aired out their clothes rather than laundering it....beautiful built-ins in the dining room areas of each apartment. Minneapolis lost a true gem when they tore this building down.

The culture of the residents that lived in there back then - even then, it was ecclectic.

Houston is exploding with growth. However, I'd trade all of our current midrises going up for just 3 of these modern beauties in Minneapolis.

We're getting boring, beige, boxes over two floors of parking with very little retail. We're busy building the slums of tomorrow, today!

These are probably my two favorite mid rise structures that I've seen in Mpls:

The colors are great. They have nice street level presence, nice covered patios going up the sides, nice height ratio and great open lofts up top. Top notch!

Great pictures! I love the urban, modern look there. Didn't realize it was so dense there and I love the street grid look from maps.google.com.
