Talking ST. JOHN'S | Pleasantville: Former U.S. Base

St. John's is the capital city of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. We were the last to join Canada in March of 1949, immediately after the Second World War.

Prior to that we were an independent Dominion with equal status within the British Commonwealth to countries such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and so on. For this reason, during the Second World War, several American, rather than Canadian, bases operated on the island of Newfoundland.

And it was a thrill for the locals. The local men hated it, of course - but the local women were in awe of the handsome American soldiers and all of the amenities on base, such as movie cinemas, which were few and far between elsewhere in the city. Many Newfoundland families have relatives in the U.S. as a result of Fort Pepperell. I, for example, have two aunts in Texas.

Pleasantville is at the extreme east end of St. John's. It was first used in the late 1500s for growing vegetables by residents of the nearby village of Quidi Vidi. It was first permanently settled in the 1600s.

U.S. soldiers first arrived in 1941 and established Fort Pepperrell. There were more than 5,000 soldiers stationed at the base at its peak. It was closed in 1958 and handed over to the Canadian government.

In 2009, the City of St. John's approved a redevelopment plan. The area is now becoming the city's newest residential neighbourhood.

This panorama will give you an idea as to the location of Pleasantville compared to the rest of the city. It is just beyond the right side of this photo:

And here are two photos of some of the new buildings going up in Pleasantville:

This is what all the apartment buildings used to look like. They were well-maintained by the Americans but neglected once the Canadian government took them over:

And here is how many of them look now:
