That's probably from either 1997 or early 1998. The county jail hadn't been started yet, and it started in 1998, and was finished 3 years later.

It was late 1997. The pilot and I were both selling TVs at Montgomery Ward in Capital Plaza.

Sceen cap from youtube.com

The drag boats are racing on (formerly) Town Lake east of the I35 bridge.
Someone saw the writing on the wall over the demise of Aquafest. Actually, it got too big for itself, too comercial, and when attendance dropped off, it became unsustainable. The folks who lived near Festival Beach complained about the noise from the speed boats, to the south they complained about the noise from the motorcycle races, and then there was the mess left over from the massive raft race. I still mourn the loss of the 80s version of it, but towards the end, it attracted too many people from out of state, promoters kept adding stages and high profile national acts to perform on them, jacking up the price of admission, had a major loss of attendance from a peak of over 200K to just 44K, and after taking a $700K hit towards the end of the 90s, shut down the whole festival. By then, Aquafest had already lost that Austin hometown fun vibe, its soul to tourists, and to the greedy inept promoters. Imo, it was the most diverse and fun festival Austin ever had, so much so that Bergstrom AFB got in on the fun by adding Aero Fest to the mix.

This presentation for 619 Congress (7th/Congress Aloft and Element Hotel) has artifacts I had not seen before. Lots of historic maps and photos.

Wow, I didn't know Texas Union had "Famous" Mexican cuisine! Can we say goodbye to the 80s forever. The only good things about it, the 80s is when I moved to Austin, my first child was born, and my wife's boobs were considerably higher on her chest back then.

I didn't realize that the '80s sucked so much until I watched that video.

This is from around 1974 or early 1975. I believe this is showing the Ashbel Smith Hall under construction. Site prep/construction was probably underway for the Bank of America Center when this was taken.

Ah, the 70s. It's amazing how there is never any significant foliage along the river banks in these old photos. That must have been on purpose because I would think it would naturally grow pretty quickly.

It's also amazing how lonely the Holiday Inn is over there. Things have changed.

I once saw an aerial photo of the area from back then and had the same realization. Much better now.

1973 - The Capitol was still the tallest until the following year when the Chase Bank Tower was built.
