Vision Vancouver Votes to Stop Cetaceans Having Sex

In a totally bizarre move the Vision Vancouver Parks Board has voted to stop allowing captive whales and dolphins to breed. This is apparently "humane". It was bad enough having to listen to every-5-year rants from the antiaquarium crowd, but this just seems cruel.

Once again vision is playing to the fringe (aka how they get elected).

Just disregard the ban and pay the fine.

I love animals but there are much worse things in the world than keeping whales and dolphins captive.

Very strange decision. Also, the Sun article notes that a number of types of beluga are threatened or endangered.

Comment from the story posted above:

I think they should also ban breeding by the Park Board…

How has the attendance at the aquarium been since they ended the killer whale program? I wonder if ending the marine mammal program entirely will have a severe effect on the aquarium as a whole?

I don't believe that these sorts of animals should be captured and placed in tanks but if they are bred in captivity that is a different story especially if the animals are endangered or on the brink of becoming endangered. Also isn't the Vancouver Aquarium highly regarded for its conservation efforts?

And like seriously, are they going to spay/neuter the animals, or just have a chaperone on duty at all times making sure they "leave room for jesus"

A Lululemon sponsored cetaceans chastity belt. I can see it broadcasts on news channels worldwide.

Who is this idiot and who are the idiots that voted for him?

Quote:
Board chair Aaron Jasper, who personally wants whales in captivity to be phased out, says it’s a balanced approach, meant to address the contentious issue of whales in captivity, but keeping the aquarium’s needs in mind.

He got emotional when asked when he thinks whales and dolphins will no longer be housed at the Vancouver Aquarium.

“I hope in my lifetime,” he said, choking back tears.

“I can tell you as the father of two young children, I am proud of what we voted on here today. If another baby beluga dies in this tank and I had to look at my kids, that would be pretty tough.”
On the bright side the Park Board is officially the first aquarium in the world with a whale abortion clinic.

They'll call it Planned Podhood.

EDIT: Figures the idiot is a real estate agent: http://aaronjasper.ca/ And on the bright side he isn't running this November.

More respectable job than being a real estate agent.

IF the parks board is making decisions that really should be left up to biologists wouldn't it be prudent to have someone with that sort of expertise on the parks board?

And this statement by Constance just left me shaking my head:

Snipped From: http://www.straight.com/news/699056/...ouver-aquarium
==============================================

In the months preceeding today's vote, the only commissioner to equal Blyth's enthusiasm for the topic was Constance Barnes.

“I don’t really believe that the folks that are out there fighting for these cetaceans are activists," she said. "I look at this as people that are advocating for an animal that doesn’t have a voice. And I know myself—and I am maybe walking a fine line here—but less than 100 years ago, my people were being bred, and less than 100 years ago, my people were being sold, and we were being traded.”

=================================================

WOW! Way to belittle a tragic history!

You don't even need to add anything to that stupidity. No surprise she wants to be a federal NDP MP. She would totally fit in.

She's also the same braniac who said the rescued False Killer Whale would have been better of euthanized:

I'm sure she would find a humane way to kill them. Though a mercy killing is in order for anyone that has to listen to her musings.

And for the record I will do what I never thought would happen in my lifetime, I endorse Hedy Fry for re-election.

Adding to the list of lawsuits piling up against Vision Vancouver controlled civic bodies, the Aquarium has filed suit against the Parks Board over its motion:

I hope the Aquarium (and other plaintiffs) win.
What the Parks Board is try to do is sick, unnatural, and cruel.
If they don't want ceteceans to reproduce, then leave them in the ocean where they belong.
