The extra floor has been approved by the Art Commission. The building will now rise 15 floors at 265 feet.

Here's a photo from yesterday (yeah, I know there's a webcam, but let me have my fun!)

I know it's a bland box, but I'm actually pretty excited about this one. I think because it was such a prominent surface lot and now it's going to match the height of the buildings surrounding it.

I agree. It might not be a great building, but it eliminates a surface parking lot and, really, with City Hall across the street all I want this building to do is reflect back on City Hall.

They are still going strong with this one, from today.

I think there is going to be an underground parking garage... also they are building directly over the regional rail lines if I'm not mistaking... so not only can they not build any higher but that is why this is taking so long. The cost to build it this high is already an absurd amount of money.

I agree that the cost for this one is absurd. Quite frankly, I'd rather this amount of money go to those who need it, and not protectionist unions who keep poor people from finding work.

Haha Cro I knew that was coming right when I saw his comment. I was expecting you to post the Burj Khalifa on this thread.

I usually err on the side of optimism, but I must say that I'm not at all interested in this building. Not necessarily for its aesthetics, but for its location/purpose. I wanted to run by the other day to take pictures (we need an update!), but I just couldn't get myself to sift through the human excrement that inhabit this area. At further risk of sounding like an aristocratic asshole, I'll sit here in my [brick] tower and observe from the internet.

I'm not sure how these two statements are incompatible. But yes, I was in a mood to vent

Sorry, I have to agree. Not sure what Summer is so excited about. I like your enthusiasm Summer but being a high rise and replacing a parking lot can't be the only criteria for measuring development.

The building is a squat ugly box and a sad excuse for a courthouse (but still not as bad as the federal courthouse on 7th). Worse, like Philaw said, it will be a magnet for the lowest life forms. If you read the papers you know what Philly's finest kids are capable of (only in Philly is the term flashmob a negative connotation). And if you've ever walked by the Municipal Court (Broad and Arch) you might have an idea of what is to come.

Who's brilliant idea was to increase the concentration of losers in this area, which will surely make Love Park, Le Meridien Hotel (over/under until they close?), and the new Dilworth Plaza even less welcoming. They may have to open a second McDonalds.
