Construction Begins On Youth Center

The VOA Youth Center is designed to provide a safe and healing environment for the homeless youth of Utah, while contributing to the surrounding Granary and Central 9th Districts. The center strives to be a model for the future, founded on ideas of choice, dignity, and acceptance–a model conceived by the young clients themselves:

“When the community sees the new VOA Youth Center, I want them to think that it is life changing, productive in helping youth take the next step to a better life”
– a homeless youth, 2013

The Center will serve as an anchor for the developing urban environment, located within walking distance of public transit and near community partners. Ample transparency provides sitelines to the exterior, allowing for a constant visual connection to the street. The architecture has been articulated to be legible and welcoming, but also to provide safety and privacy.

Looks like the remodeling of the facade of 136 East South Temple (formerly called University Club Bldg.) has started.

Not sure the sorta Classical new base shown in brochure is successful although perhaps it is viewed as a gesture towards the Alta Club next door.

Vivint to create over 3,000 new jobs at it's Salt Lake Metro Headquarters - Solar City to establish Regional Headquarters in Salt Lake City and create over 4,000 new jobs.

SALT LAKE CITY — Thousands of new jobs are expected to be created during the next decade following two expansion announcements Friday.

About 7,000 new full-time positions, boosted by incentives approved by the Governor's Office of Economic Development, were announced, including energy service provider SolarCity, which plans to open a regional corporate headquarters in Utah that could create 4,000 jobs and $94 million in capital investment, GOED announced.

The California-based company employs more than 12,000 workers nationwide. Upon completion, its new local facility will house its regional corporate headquarters and support functions including human resources, finance, legal, accounting, marketing and sales.

"We've chosen Utah as a regional headquarters because of its educated workforce and affordable cost of living for those in the professional roles we will create in the Beehive State," Brendon Merkley, executive vice president of customer operations for SolarCity, said. "In addition to creating skilled labor and technical roles, the growing solar industry also has increased demand for professional services and supporting functional roles." ...Read More - http://www.ksl.com/?sid=35748404&nid...-over-10-years

The design of the VOA Homeless Youth Center is nice, but its the fourth or fifth homeless facility in or adjacent to the Granary District. The two facilities on 200S are already slowly killing the Gateway Center. The City needs to spread these facilities out more. Being harassed by 30 or 40 chronic homeless try to get to the mall is really going to discourage families from visiting the area

- Shrunk the photo too -

I have added (very roughly):

1 (Red) - 151 State
2 (Blue) - Regent Hotel
3 (Yellow) - AUC
4 (Lt Green) - APS Tower

I didn't include anything that didn't have a known address and would be visible from this angle.

Heights and sizes (widths) are estimates only and based on their locations from the image source.

While APS Tower is more fantasy than reality at this point, I still included it to just give an estimated impact.

From this angle though, AUC makes a large impact as it stretches the skyline further.

For filling gaps, 111 and Regent Hotel fill the gap along the 1st-2nd South blocks.

Once we get additional projects and locations, I can update them on the image if wanted or someone with better skills could include the renderings
on the image.

Downtown Update - 111 Tower - Utah Performing Arts Center and Regent Street - Under Construction

Utah Performing Arts Center and 111 Tower

...Lead architects, Cesar Pelli and Mitch Hirsch explained in detail the design, which will include a three-balcony, opera house configuration for the seating area and a large,
four-story “Winter Garden” lobby with glass exterior facing Main St. They also touted the fact that the theater building will have no “back”. With pedestrian passages from Main St. to Regent St,
a public plaza in front of the truck loading docks, and a rejuvenated Regent St full of nightlife and daytime action, the NPAC will be a driving force in activating downtown, on the blocks to
the immediate south of the spectacular new City Creek Center...

City unveils new plans for downtown Regent Street by 111 Tower & EPAC Theater

Jason Lee, Deseret News

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8...y-theater.html

Becker and other city administrators unveiled the new schematic design plans for the Regent Street block located on the east side of the new Eccles Theater, between 100 South and
200 South.

Artist rendering of view from 200 South of proposed Regent Street redevelopment project aimed at making the mid-block connector between City Creek and
the Gallivan Center a place to “gather, discover and connect.” (Salt Lake City)

The project would include retail and dining establishments, a public plaza, along with custom landscape architecture throughout the common areas. While the street would still be
accessed by motor vehicle traffic, the area would also be accessible to pedestrians and could be converted to pedestrian-only access for events such as concerts, Becker explained.

“Since I took office, a primary object is to make downtown a gathering place for the region — and have it be a true welcoming environment for people seeking all kinds of activities that you
can really only find in the downtown area,” he said. “We see this as part of what we are doing to make this the 'cultural core' of the region.”...

...The redevelopment project is aimed at attracting more people into downtown and generating a distinctive experience that can’t happen anywhere else, said STRUCK agency's Brent Watts,
who is part of the creative design team for the Regent Street project.

“We want to create a 'branded' experience,” he said, adding that besides gathering and dining, the corridor will include local artists and local shops.

“We want sizeable, small-scale retail shops on the street,” Watts said. “That’s important.”...

That means the current height of the core is about 330 feet, which is the proposed height of the Regent Street Hotel!

The City will achieve these objectives by requiring that the development include the following elements:

Historic Rehabilitation
Mixed-Income Housing
Permanent Supportive Housing

I do have to say that there is so much hotel talk downtown. There are so many proposed at the moment that I have a hard time believing that they can all be built. It will be interesting to see which projects move forward and what sort of impact the proposals have on companies bidding for the convention center hotel.
