Smile CLEVELAND - At the very least, go East!

Some photos from the East side, from Cleveland proper out to the small towns of Chagrin Falls and Burton and back and points in between, and of course some random photos thrown in the mix.

Leaving my neighborhood Tremont via Clark Avenue, there's a great view of the Industrial Valley:

Bridge supports for the now-demolished Clark Avenue bridge:

One of the jackknife bridges in the distance, the I-490 bridge above:

RTA Red Line Rapid station at East 55th:

East 55th Street - lots of churches on this stretch, some were originally built as Jewish synagogues:

Carnegie Avenue at East 55th and the "Will this redevelopment EVER get off the ground?" building:

Approaching the Cleveland Clinic:

New Cancer Center at the Cleveland Clinic:

The recently rebuilt Cedar-University Circle RTA Red Line station:

The charming Cedar-Fairmount commercial strip in Cleveland Heights (inner-ring streetcar suburb):

Typical residential along Meadowbrook:

The impressive Church of the Saviour on Lee Road:

The quaint commercial strip at Fairmount Boulevard and South Taylor Road:

Bell tower of the First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland:

Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple - that architecture, oy vey!

The domed church on East 55th? That's the former home to this congregation which left for Cleveland Heights in the 1920s and then to this location in outer ring suburbia. The neighborhood might be more affluent, but what an ugly bunker of a building in a sea of asphalt.

Ah well, on our way to Chagrin Falls - with a few exceptions, the larger homes and estates tend not to be visible from the road; old-school Cleveland wealth tends to be of the quieter variety.

Fall color wasn't quite at peak but not bad:

It's not Fall in Cleveland without a visit to the charming village of Chagrin Falls:

And we're off to Burton to take in the sights and sounds of the Apple Butter Festival.

En route, the headquarters of ASM International in Russell Township with its landmark geodesic dome:

And here we are - the fall color seemed closer to peak the further away we got from the city:

Yep, we're close to Amish country:

There are some nice historic homes on the perimeter of the town square:

The festival is held on the grounds of Century Village, adjacent to the town square - some buildings are original, others are replications. It's a mix of history and chintz (as you'll see):

Oops! Didn't see the sign until after the fact - oh well:

Like I said - there's a little bit of chintz

Even here, sprawl encroaches on the agricultural areas - time to get back to Cleveland proper:

I'll take this type of suburbia, thank you:

Back to Cedar-Fairmount:

The recently completed Cleveland School of the Arts:

And one last skyline shot for that day:

Onto those random photos - all this time I've had my "newer" camera, I had been meaning to pick up a filter but never got around to it. Took a few test shots to see if it helped.

So far so good...

Then there was one of *those* days - the days where I see how the sun is setting, how the clouds are dark and the fall air is crisp and luckily I had my camera in tow. I guess it's not just the trees that get to enjoy that Fall color

Hope you enjoyed!

Just awesome. So much soul. The mixture of photos has everything. the small towns (e.g., Chagrin Falls) are absolutely charming. The setting sun skyline photos are first rate.

Nice pictures! Burton sure doesn't look like a New England town now. Maybe the town had the old architecture, but Victorian architecture isn't quite New England now. Looking at aerial maps, the town square has been ruined. The water tower right in the middle of town is a shame. Even if it wasn't there, the town square has been rounded off with the streets. You can see the original outline of the square in the houses in the corner of the square, which don't face the new street outline.

Chagrin Falls seems like the much nicer town. It reminds me a lot of Williamsville, NY. Both are suburbs (Williamsville for Buffalo), both have a little waterfall in town, and both have their commercial area right next the the waterfall. The architecture is similar in both towns, too.

Awesome pics Mayday.

I love the new arts center. Gorgeous!

Also, the Tudor Arms Hotel turned out very well. What a handsome brick highrise!

Cleveland does seem to have more hills than one would expect. Is Burton considered a suburb?
