after a few weeks break the core is now rising again - though has now stepped in - to make it slimmer as the tower tapers upwards you can make out the smaller core box emerging from above the older larger one.

But the core was only stepped in on three sides? I thought tapering of the tower was pretty uniform on all sides.

It's cool to see the glass chasing the steel chasing the core. Its a wild race but we know who will win in the end.

Not so creative or challenging in terms of structural engineering here.

I've said it before, though. The structural engineering firm is the same as 1 WTC in New York - WSP Cantor Seinuk. I guess the design specifications didn't require the rigidity like the WTC did (floor columns embedded in the core, the concrete core lagging behind the steel instead of vice versa as on The Shard and most other buildings.)

The larger The Shard gets, the more I like it. Congrats, London.

Already becoming a dominating tower on London.

Photos taken this morning. Gorgeous weather today in London, a true Indian Summer.

Guess where this was taken from?

I'm in love with this glass!

Couldn't resist taking the mast/shard concept analogy photo.

On another note, this building has to have one of the most massive cores Ive seen, does it have to do with the soil its built on?

That's the view from atop 55 Broadway - London Underground's HQ (built directly above St James's Park tube station) and located inbetween the Palace of Westminster (aka Houses of Parliament) and Victoria Station. Buckingham Palace would be to the left in that photo. However while that building is an office, there are countless residential apartments across London that have as equally spectacular views.

I thought it was because the tower was multi-use (offices, residential, hotel and two viewing platforms), that there would need to be quite a few lift shafts to seperate everyone in an orderly fashion.
