The Halifax peninsula is much larger geographically (I think about 20 square kilometres vs 5.6 for Vancouver) and is a bigger part of the city. A lot of peninsula neighbourhoods are not considered part of the city centre.
The overall layout and urban form of the two cities is very similar - one of the bridges linking Dartmouth to Halifax is also virtually identical to the Lions Gate in Vancouver.
