I think why I don't like it is the fact that they are such similar words in both languages that it just seems dumb having both.
I absolutely agree. "Centre" is the same in both languages, it does not need to be shown twice.

I may be in the minority, but translating proper names is flat out ridiculous and of no value whatsoever. I'm sure unilingual individuals, in both official languages, would be intelligent enough to figure out that the large building in downtown Moncton is our event center without having to get it translated.

Hech, maybe we should start demanding that the city also translate every street name in town or better yet, that people start having their names in both official languages- Andre/Andrew, Pierre/Peter, Michel/Michael, etc.

On the bright side, there's good change our event center will have the longest name of any arena in the country.

Just like our airport:

Aeroport Internationale du Grand Moncton Romeo LeBlanc Greater Moncton International Airport

It's a wonder they could fit the name on the sign!

Or here's a thought. Just make 2 signs next to each other, one for each language.

English people can refer to it by the English name and French people can refer to it by the French name. There is no need to say the name in both languages.

Or as the locals call it..."Moncton Airport" or simply "The Airport". If I go to Toronto, I say either Pearson or Billy Bishop. Everyone in Canada knows what I mean.

Whatever they call the Downtown Centre, people will simply ignore the official name and simplify their lives with a single name.

"Hey KISS is coming back to Moncton next summer!" "Oh really Jim, where?" My answer will be either, "The Casino", "At Magnetic Hill", "The Downtown Centre", "UM Stadium", "The Waterfront", etc.

These dual bilingual names are ridiculous. And if I was a tourist coming into the area for the first time, I'd be like WTF with the names!!!

I'm not for the duality of the sign on the centre either, but even thought the word "centre" is spelled the same, I think it's the grammar, where in French "centre" comes before and in English it comes after the principal word or words, whatever it/they will be. LOL, I just hope it's not as long as the airport's official name!!!

One would think that if the Province was actually bilingual it wouldn't matter whether the sign was in English or French because everyone would be able to read it regardless.

It's entirely a duality thing and facilities doing their best to acknowledge both groups, as messy as it is aesthetically.

The difference in NB is pretty obvious: When traveling elsewhere, say to Vancouver, signs inside the airport are trilingual. Despite this, the airport name is consistently just Vancouver International Airport.

In NB it would almost assuredly being something great like 国际机场 Aeroport Internationale du Grand Moncton-Greater Moncton International Airport 国际机场

I don't mind it when they put both names on one sign, sharing the common portion. But there's no need for both languages to be included whenever the airport is mentioned; it should just be described using the language in which the article or document is written.

On a more exciting topic, rumour has it seats are starting to be delivered and the beginning of their installation is imminent! They have already installed seats in the suites. The rest are to begin very soon.

Yep, if you bring up the internal cam you can see "tons" of boxes on the floor of the arena. Looks like they are starting. I wish this cam was like the outside cam and not refreshed once a minute or so. The "oval" in the plaza is really taking shape. I think the plaza is going to be awesome!

Vorkuta, hello. If you see this the outdoor webcam is frozen again on a night scene. It must have frozen overnight. Thanks!

I heard something today about some form of public presentation coming up regarding the RFP for the new scoreboard at the events centre. It'll be interesting to see what they have in mind.

Moncton to buy $1.4M scoreboard for events centre

Quote:
Moncton city council voted in favour of spending $1.39 million on a scoreboard and video display system for the new downtown events centre being built in the city's downtown.

Council held a special meeting Thursday morning and the digital scoreboard was the only item on the agenda. Those present voted to purchase the scoreboard from Daktronics, a U.S. company that designs and manufacturers scoreboards.

Power had been relocated without letting us know. We're getting it replaced this PM.

As a French and perfectly bilingual person I find the name of our downtown centre awful and clunky. The Moncton Airport name is also ridiculous. Roméo LeBlanc as a name is fine for the airport but that whole duality syndrome in Moncton is getting silly.

Roméo Leblanc Int'l Airport, why is that so complicated?
Aéroport International Roméo LeBlanc
These 2 names are much better and separate.

Perhaps it's putting it all end to end, that's the problem! du Grand Moncton and Greater Moncton that doesn't belong. We know it's THE airport is for the whole Moncton metro area, we dont have several large airports around here.

My last comment on the issue, because we're not talking about the Downtown Centre anymore...
