Obama takes on zoning laws in bid to build more housing, spur growth

City zoning battles usually are fought block by block, and the president's involvement will create friction, particularly among environmental groups and the not-in-my-backyard crowd. But the White House jawboning is welcome news to many others, including mayors and builders increasingly foiled by community opposition to development.

There is more to it than just this. Yes, this creates high barriers to entry, but developer financing is also very tough right now.

this is great news though.

i dont ever recall zoning ever being addressed like that at the top level.

I've thought about this as well. The only issue is there just isn't any constituency for it. NIMBYism is so successful because the groups who are harmed by it (renters) are mostly disenfranchised at the polls. The opposite is true of incumbent home owners, who benefit the most from NIMBY policies.

The fact that the Obama administration only mentioned zoning at the twilight of his presidency is evidence of this problem.

Obama might want to check out the zoning laws right there in Washington, DC, like lifting the height limits there!

I don't have an issue with the height limit in DC. It allows for 15 stories or so and the city is growing vibrantly. It has a density that can rival many skyscraper cities. If you are going to have a height limit, I feel DC does it right.



In no way or form can the DC height limit be construed as a form of NIMBYism.
