It's definitely a laid back city, which is partly a cultural thing is partly because of its expanse – you can't be in a hurry when it takes forever to get anywhere. I don't know about cleaner, though. Like any mainland Chinese city, Beijing can be pretty filthy. Hong Kong is much cleaner in every way.

It's a pretty good brew, too. Beijing actually has one of the liveliest craft beer scenes in Asia – five or six breweries have emerged in the past few years. One of them, Great Leap, is really top notch and is pioneering the use of Chinese grains and hops in craft beer.

I never would have thought of that but I definitely see what you mean. It's that kind of shabby, low-slung but very lively urban form.

It's one of my favourite urban experiences. Most of the hutongs are so quiet you can hardly believe you're in the middle of a city of 20 million. Just you, your footsteps, the wind in the trees overhead and the occasional e-bike buzzing past.
