Based on the handy chart posted on the 16th, it would appear that they had about 10 floors to go until the mechanical floor (or whatever the transition is to the setback/hotel portion). It's definitely a Christmas tree (and I seriously doubt that it cost a few grand, as suggested - setting it up during lunch hour would be no big deal).

Lets just be conservative and say that the crane only costs $50k per day. That means that one pick cost $1,666.00.

You only get about 6 productive hours out of your workers, two of them probably secured this down, in about 10-30 minutes. That is about another $130 wasted.

So yea, a $2k Christmas tree thats not even visible. Must be nice to be that rich.
It's not very big, so it's entirely possible that it went up tied to something, or that approval was given in the spirit of the season. I don't think that it's useful presume the worst about your fellow men based on conjecture.

Geez man, do you think those things are worth 50 million dollars? You can buy a used one for 100K (here) What is it brand new? 200K? 300K? At your rate, it would cost 18 million/year to have a crane

They probably just dump the tree on top of a regular lift, no big deal...

It's not them goofing off. It is a tradition and almost every project has one.

Well, that's a shame. It's nice that they did it. And an EXTREMELY small expenditure of time and financial resources in the scheme of this project. As an employer, I personally think it's important to have happy and motivated employees. the little things go a long way. And as ConstructStudent said, tradition...Anyway, UP, UP CITC goes. They have started to fireproof portions of steel. Hopefully, we'll see some glass before too long.

It looks like another 9 to 10 floors to go until the hotel section.

Arch+Eng is butthurt, LOL. When Comcast is done they will carry in a bigger Christmas tree through the front door into the lobby and decorate it.

Hey man it is their money not mine.
Iron workers slack off some time.
I wouldn't allow this at my company (albeit we are very small so we would not be doing the structural for CITC) because I simply couldn't afford it.

It's a lot of money for a worthless tree that no one can see, but then again, these guys are billionaires. So, doesn't matter to them.

I guess employee morale isn't something you value very much?

I can't believe how upset you're getting over this tree. You'd have a conniption in NYC, where there's a new tree being raised every day.
