VASA Fitness

VASA Fitness originated in Utah.
It has a total of 38 locations in Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Kansas, and now Oklahoma.

The first Oklahoma location was in Tulsa, which opened this summer.
Two more are coming to Oklahoma City: at SW 44th & Western, and NW 23rd & Penn.

VASA has large facilities that typically include the following amenities:
  • a basketball court
  • large indoor pool
  • raquetball courts
  • free weight area
  • aerobics / group exercise
  • spin classes
  • hot tub hyrdro-massage
  • steam sauna
  • tanning and childcare facilities
Here's the floor plan for the Tulsa location:

SW 44th & Western

This location is north of a Sears department store.

https://www.okctalk.com/showthread.php?t=44759

The Sears is closing down.
That building will be partially demolished and the remainder redeveloped.

In that last photo, you can see Capitol Hill High School prominently in the background.

This was built in 1928.

The dome structure, which is a fieldhouse, is more modern -- built in 1955.

https://okcmod.com/architecture/gall...ol-fieldhouse/

The fieldhouse is still in use today.

By early October, the SW 44th location was complete.
Here are a few facebook photos showing the interior:

NW 23rd & Penn

The second OKC VASA location is at a former Buy For Less store.

https://www.okctalk.com/showthread.php?t=44759

This is practically right next to Oklahoma City University.

The Buy For Less store had been closed and boarded up since late 2016.
In this instance, instead of a new build, the existing 59,000 sf structure is being completely renovated.

Flashback:

Just for comparison, here are a few construction shots from back in April.

The basic structure has been in place for a long time now.
Just takes forever to flesh out the details and the interior.

Lingo construction, who are building this, will be moving in themselves for their new headquarters.
Reportedly they have already moved into a few offices on the ground floor.

Convention Center Garage

https://www.okctalk.com/showthread.php?t=44229&page=7

More details have emerged about the design of the Convention Center garage.

Three sides of the structure will be covered by 4” polycarbonate tiles installed on vertical steel cables.
The cables will be spaced 4.75” apart.

https://twitter.com/TAParchitecture/...58147318566912

The tiles (Duo-Gard FUSION) come in 102 standard colors and three different finishes from clear to matt.
They will form the basis of the "skin" of the garage exterior, allowing for artistic display.

The city just put out a 'Call To Artists' for this exterior design.

Deadline for Artist Submissions: January 8, 2020
Notification of Selection: by March 10, 2020

The north face, which will be blocked by an 8-story residential building (not yet constructed), will not be adorned, naturally.

The Bradford House

12-17-2019

https://www.okctalk.com/showthread.php?t=42173&page=3

A new cream colored paint is being applied over the old brick which, originally, was more orange in color.

This is a bit controversial, as painting over original brick is something that is not generally allowed in historic preservation.
The building is outside of any area requiring a design review and approval, so the developers are free to do as they like.
But some folks will be rankled by this alteration.

I personally think that the color looks good and will fit in perfectly with the boutique hotel design that is being created.

First Americans Museum

https://www.okctalk.com/showthread.php?t=12455&page=98

Previously known as the American Indian Cultural Center and Museum.

A few days ago, city and tribal officials announced a name change and re-branding for the museum, still under construction.

https://www.okctalk.com/showthread.php?t=12455&page=99

The change was initiated by tribal leaders who felt the old name was lengthy and awkward, along with the fact that "Indian" is a historically inaccurate term.

I can't argue with that, especially the awkwardness -- even the abbreviation AICCM was clumsy.
FAM is much simpler to say, and write.

Mayor Holt announcing the new branding:

Meanwhile, on the ground, a new glass curtain wall is being installed.

19 & 23 NE 6th

A pair of warehouses are being converted into a restaurant, office space, and rooftop bar.
This is immediately next to Central Exchange and Parlor OKC, which finished up this summer.

This development is not exactly moving at lightning speed, but it is progressing...
