I agree that the building looks a little stout in that rendering, but I think it will actually look much better in real life.
The rendering is set from the one perspective from which the view of the building is completely unimpeded by any of its neighbors. In reality you will almost never see this thing from that angle, though--there will always be multiple buildings in the way obscuring portions of the base.
The higher floors will be more visible, but by time you get to the higher floors the proportions are much nicer. This is a saving grace of 30 Hudson Yards as well; it's base is deceptively thick but once everything else is complete you will only see the slimmer top portion peaking above the canopy.
From the rendering I get the impression this building will be very fat.
It's not terrible though, I guess it adds nice balance to the skyline since a lot of new towers going up are super thin.
It will be fat, as will the Spiral across the street from it.

50 Hudson, the Spiral, and 3 Hudson all ready to shoot up out of the ground. Each massive office towers that would probably be the largest office tower going up anywhere else in the country, just to put it into perspective.
