I just found in the January 16, 2017 council agenda that a demolition permit was issued for this property.

I like design 1 and 3, although I like 3 better.

A fairly bland design don't you think? But one wouldn't expect anything remotely interesting in St. John's when it comes to cool architecture unfortunately.

It gets the job done, I suppose. The coast guard probably isn't worried about design or anything. It isn't exciting, but it's also not offensive.....is that considered a win?

The 3 story addition at the top looks so nasty and out of place. There's no reason why they couldn't have finished that to match the rest of the building.

WOW! How imaginative is that...townhouses! This is a joke, or more accurately, a total lack of creativity from the developer.

Since the school closed I've joked to a few friends of mine that if I won the lottery I would love to buy the property and re-purpose the school by building up on it and extending it to create something with density. Sadly I did not win the lottery.

I realize that the school does have asbestos remediation that is required but to just bulldoze it for a few more cookie cutter townhouses is just so short sighted, its a joke...our city is a joke.

There's definitely a lack of vision. The proposed townhouses are hideous and suburban as well - faux stone accents, garage doors, etc. And they'll of course be set back, and there's probably some sort of cul-de-sac behind around which the seniors apartments are placed.

Our development seems to be going the opposite of the way it should. Clearly rural or suburban features are creeping ever-closer to downtown, rather than urbanity spreading outwards. Even here in Rabbittown, there are now enough rebuilt houses with set-backs to make it weird and hideous:

You'll be able to land a jumbo jet on one of our near-downtown streets if the city keeps allowing shit like this.

In 100 years, St. John's won't seem any larger - it'll just all look like Cowan Heights and feel like it was founded in the 1980s.

I may stand to be corrected but I think the reason for the setbacks and/or garages is the requirement for a minimum of one parking space. There is a new home being built on Military Road by Rawlins Cross (lot was vacant for years after a fire) that is a pretty decent Victorian recreation but it has a bloody big black garage door taking up half the first floor....i guess that is to replicate where the horse carriage was kept 100 years ago.

Lol for a place in recession, the construction scene isn't doing too bad.

I don't know if we'll see many new larger scale proposals (other than from the massive Galway area) until the economy spins around but some of the larger older proposals are coming to fruition now and hopefully will carry us over until the economy heals up.
