That's awesome, especially considering how bad things were for so long. What's causing this turnaround in the region, and what sorts of industries are providing new jobs for this much lower unemployment rate?
I really like the Windsor/Essex region, a very underrated little corner of Canada in my opinion, and I would definitely consider moving down there at some point if the right opportunity presented itself...

Well the main reason is a very healthy auto industry and the billions of dollars that was just invested here by FCA, and its spinoff jobs, but all parts of the economy are doing well right now, so it's spread out among various industries. The regional economy has also been diversifying over the past few years, so that is a very important part of the new jobs growth as well, especially all the small businesses that have been quietly expanding.
I agree that this area is very underrated, but word is getting out, and lots of people from outside the region are now moving here to retire or for work. Most new residents are shocked by how livable and affordable everything is here, especially considering all that the region offers, it's a real bargain.

Don't forget building of the new bridge is slated to start in 2018 and last for 2-4 years, which will further help stabilize the economy in the area for the foreseeable future.
I was out yesterday and came across a sign advertising a new luxury seniors residence that is coming soon to the corner of Tuscarora and Goyeau, across from the Buddhist temple and the old Days Inn. The rendering shows it at 6 stories, and looks to be fronting Tuscarora. It would be a huge improvement over the empty parking lot that has been there for what seems to be forever! Anyway, it's great to see DT properties being looked at again when it comes to private development. We also need more midrise developments like this throughout the core!

Really? I don't find it any sketchier than other parts of DT, it's more empty and deserted with that lot behind it fenced in with chain link fencing and weeds growing out of the busted pavement. It's just such a dead zone, hopefully this proposal gets built.

That's just it, the dead areas feel sketchy.
Side note, I'm working on uploading a bunch of pictures of stuff going on downtown, probably by tonight.
Thanks for the photos. Interesting looking rendering there. Am I the only one who thinks that flag is too large? I understand this wasn't a project that the city itself came up with (though council endorsed it). To me it gives off a kind of inferiority complex vibe...like we have to erect an obscenely large flag so the Americans across the river can see it. Looks like it kind of blocks some of the skyline view from Ouellette also which I'm not thrilled about.
Thanks for the pics Symz! I was thinking that this would front Tuscarora because that frontage is the longest of the property, the Goyeau section is half the width. Maybe they will be using the fenced off lot behind it as well, then it would make sense to front Goyeau. That would be awesome to get rid of both those eyesore empty lots at once! Fingers crossed!

I was against this giant flag project from the beginning specifically because I thought it would block the view of Detroit from Ouellette! It's not quite as bad as I thought it would be, so I'm happy about that, but I feel that a slightly smaller flag would have been a much better option!

Don't let the pics throw you off, the flag is a perfect size, it appears too big but you just have to see it first hand. I feel its about time we threw a little Canadian patriotism out there, why can't WE be proud too.

I'll have to walk out and see it for myself once the rain stops. I'm ok with the patriotic thing, especially since we are directly on the border and Windsor is one of the first Canadian cities that many Americans in the Midwest will see when coming into Canada, its a nice welcome!

^ I'm so happy to see the University moving quickly to convert this building, I hope they respect the history of it in their renovations. DT will really look different once this cluster is finished, having lots of young, artsy students around should definitely change the demographics of the area for the better!
