Lots of downtowns have cable stayed bridges...But Des Moines IA...based on that Winnipeg Fwy. video is one of 'em.

Major projects built in the past 30 yrs. that I've generally LIKED and not opposed:

* Polo Park 2nd level (1986)
* CPT (1990)
* Bishop-Pembina interchange upgrade (1990)
* Manitoba Hydro Tower (2000s)
* That cafeteria bldg. at Assiniboine Park
* Redone Duck Pond at Assiniboin Park
* Grant Park Shopping Centre upgrade (1989)
* TD Centre (1991)
* "new" PSB building (2016)
* The original The Forks area, not the overdeveloped vers. we have today
* The 10 storey apt. building on Tache (2006)
St. Vital Centre expansion (1986), not mid 2000s expansion.
* Transit Terminals, not the $30 M Osborne Station.

I'm not anti-development. I just don't want development to be "stupid".

Yeah but none look like that with a restaurant in the middle and The Forks in the background.

it is not a regular cable-stayed bridge. it is cantilevered on one side and that is the source of its beauty I think. if there is another one like that I am not aware of it. that bridge is a work of art..

I think the controversy lies in the magnitude of financial assistance... I love the design, but that's a huge output for something that we'll have a hard time measuring its actual value for the city.

Not to sound too Winnipeg, but I'm sure this could have been done attractively for almost half the price.

Nonetheless, I'm sure I will like it when it's done.

The Manitoba and federal governments will spend $50 million on Canada's Diversity Gardens, an Assiniboine Park Conservancy project set for completion by the end of 2019

If I have Firefox, how do I get beyond the paywall? Not that reading a liberal paper like the Freep is really something I wanna do anymore.

The Rebel.media doesn't do urban planning issues.

Are they going to start charging admissions to the Tropical House one day too?

I prefer the Perim. Hwy. and the suburban beltway be upgraded before any "diversity" gardens.

I'd say it's more small time - but yes, they are chipping in. Ottawa is covering 2/3 of the cost.

I understand taxes quite well thanks. I'm just not bothered by our city (or any city) getting an upgrade.

Well, if you understand taxes well, do you never feel bad that when we vote for Trudeau or previously Selinger that you're telling other people what to do with their money?

I'm not in the top tax bracket by any means, but I saw the rage in 200k+ earners when all the people making less money than them started trumpeting the virtues of paying taxes and increasing gov spending three-fold.

I dunno man, I'm grinding a lot and hearing Ottawa's got it is disheartening knowing that if I improve in my profession I'm paying a larger share in matters I have no say in. I'll throw in the caveat that I really hate taxes.

I know I'll appreciate the gardens, but this shit doesn't fall from the sky, nor from Ottawa.

We're not paying any less tax under BP, now are we likely to any time soon, and neither you, I or any other taxpayer who is not a major donor or a crony has a say in how the coffers are emptied. I'd rather have the money spent here than in the true-blue heartland, and this is the sort of marquee project that's worth funding IMO -- especially since it wasn't coming our way in order to repave the crumbling roads.

That's such a red herring.

A forum member could be in favor of just about every project on design in Winnipeg, but be against one single project and they are lumped into that category. I still remember how some had reservations in regards to the massive amounts of public funding going into the CMHR, and some of the fanatically pro-Museum posters calling them "Holocaust deniers," of all things.

I agree, LilZebra. Interesting list too.

50 Million later....

To me, it's kinda small even for its price. If they really wanted to impress, they could have made 2 or 3 of these buildings really specializing in the different eco-systems. Those are just my reservations though.... I do think that this project will turn out well-done.

To be fair if we don't spend it here it'll just go to Quebec, which gets a significantly disproportionate amount of federal tax money. Might as well take it here instead.

Not really the place, but, no. We actually get a higher portion than they do.

Not that much higher. In the future, we will be a "have" province.
