What happened to the Highway Ice Plants

I'm sure some of you Sacramento natives will remember that many years ago the sides of the freeways in sacramento were covered in a deep, beautiful green bed of ice plants. I can't remember the exact date but I remember we had a freak frost one winter and they were almost all killed.

Now the freeway gardens look like crap with weeds. Does anyone have any information on why they were not replanted.

Most died off during winter cold snaps or droughts. In particular the five-year drought in the late '80s, followed by the 1990 record lows, one of the most damaging freezes on record. The state decided not to replace them. In some parts of the state near the coast you'll still see the South African native along the highway and in people's yards.

That's cool, I'm all for conserving water, still it's been 10 years, can they replace it with something other then weeds. I realize weeds may not need much water but my crabgrass is more attractive.

As far as water conservation goes, I've noticed that the sprinkler system they have still turns on and one portion of Highway 50 is now covered in English Ivy... does that stuff take less water?

Well you do make a good point LandofFrost. I just got back from San Diego and was really impressed by the freeway landscaping. In comparison our freeways looks janky. Doesn't being the capitol city count for anything in this state? Even CalTrans' attempt at sprucing up I-5 downtown with some paint and colored glass was lame.
