Delta to cut international flights

Delta said Wednesday that it planned to cut back on international flights by 3% during the last three months of the year. It will target countries hurt most by the volatility in the currency and commodity markets this year.

The airline said that there will be a 15% to 20% reduction in service from Japan, 15% reduction to Brazil, 15% to 20% reduction to Africa, India and the Middle East, and suspension of service to Moscow.

.....

(from CNN.com)
Did someone say subsidy? That's how we're held onto this flight in the past.

After the 1st few years they didn't need to subsidize this one anymore. It was supporting
itself. Now whether they keep it or not who knows. But Nike, Adidas and Intel certainly work in our favor.

It hasn't been subsidized for years, same with the Amsterdam flight.

Honestly I hope DL leaves pdx-nrt. An Asian carrier would fill the void instantly. DL would be stupid to cut pdx-nrt with all their contracts. It's been very profitable in the last year with very high load factors. On various occasions this summer it is operating with a larger aircraft to handle all the bookings.

doing PDX-NRT on Delta on Monday just to get a few days in Japan.

As the hub in NRT gets cut more and more, I also wish Korean or ANA would do a ICN/NRT flight to PDX to allow for more seamless connections.

I use the non-stop flights to save time, but, with AS mileage plan earnings being cut in half on Delta, I'm certainly open to anyone else doing the routes non-stop. Not worth being elite on Delta unless you are Diamond it seems, so rather keep gold status on AS with a better partner.

Plus, PDX-SEA-Asia sucks. Much rather do PDX-NRT/ICA-XXX

Neat flight as a gateway to the redwoods without a car, if one only rents down there...

Ah, yes! It doesn't happen much. It is Delta 403. Portland to New York JFK then an ongoing flight with the same flight number to London. But unlike most "direct flights" which means same plane with a stop vs non-stop, this flight number you actually have to
change from a B757 to a B767. So it is even less direct than it sounds.

It'll be fun to do some plane spotting at PDX this summer with these new European tails coming in.

Is it code-named the "Weird" flight? From the 1st Keep It Weird City (Austin) to ours which seems to keep using the phrase... lol!

Doesn't Southwest also have a PDX-Austin flight?

Yes. It only operates during the summer months though, and its been on and off for years. Alaska's service will be daily year-round service.
