Rainy Philadelphia

It was the grayest time of the year and the worst kind of weather to be a tourist in Philadelphia, but there was something in this city that will have me come back again in the future.

Nice pics - I may not like dreary weather but there's something neat about the skyscrapers disappearing into the low clouds.

Looks like you did a good job of hitting all the "if you only have one day" places - hope you have an opportunity to come back and see some of the other great parts of our city. Nice pics. I ride the train outbound from 30th St Station every morning, and get a view of the Comcast Center from the west. That fog effect is present very often when it's really early in the morning - as your pics show, it's really cool. I am not a big fan of that building, but I think it looks great from the east and west, and I really like how it seems to change colors and be kind of like a cameleon(sp?). Same with the Liberties.

Looks like a really lovely city, did you feel safe there? I heard the crime rates are a bit high in Philly, but I suppose it's just in certain areas?

Between the colonial buildings and the unapologetic modernist office towers, it reminds me surprisingly of Melbourne on a dreary winters day.

Cool pics.

The weather was the same during my visit in March 1998! Philly is one of my favourite cities in the US!

You have nothing to worry about (outside of the general awareness that one must have in any urban area that's frequented by tourists) when in any part of the city that you'd want to visit / tour. Crime can happen anywhere, of course, but the places where you'd need to be "worried" are neighborhoods that you'd have no reason to ever go to if you're visiting as a tourist.

How'd you like Reading Terminal Market? One of the best places to do anything in the city as long as there's no convention going on.

Thank you. It was indeed my first time in Philly and only had 8 hours to see the main sights. I think I did fine, although I definitely want to return when the sky is blue. City hall tower and the penitentiary sound like something I want to see, as well as do more touring of the Downtown area.

It was an interesting experience and it was pure luck that we ended up visiting the place. I didn't know about before hand and we kind of just ventured there. It was really packed on that Saturday and unfortunately we had just had lunch, so I didn't have the change to try the local delicatessen. Oh well, next time.

Beautiful pics. I feel guilty living so close and not having spent much time there since my ship was in the yards there (back in '75).

Thanks for sharing your brief visit with us.

Thanks for all these pictures of Philadelphia, Klaus!

Philadelphia looks very nice, even under the rain. Great job and pictures.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain.

I've lived in Philly for 10 years and unless I'm alone in the outskurts of the city at like 1 AM (which is never), I feel safe.

The crime rate is high in ways that don't affect normal people. It's mostly gang kind of violence that doesn't leave the shitty neighborhoods. Unless you are in a gang (which btw, I've never once seen a gang in real life here), you are totally safe.

Great pics!

I hope you come back for a more extended stay (hopefully in Spring when it's amazing weather here).

Also, if you love photography, there are some amazing pictures to be taken outside of the general tourist zone.

I would suggest trying Germantown, East Falls, Boathouse Row, Fairmount Park, and West Philly.

You were mostly in the eastern area of Philly where all of the historic sites are and then crossed west to Logan Square. Make sure to check out Rittenhouse Square, University City, Broad St, and City Hall for leisure if you come back.
