The old format was dying.

Might as well try something new, and reach out to the non-skyscraper fan general public for a general city specific convergence area.

Now, we just need a domain name that is more reflective of our new objective.

I really like how it is, and i'm sure it'll eventually pick up with a lot more activity the BC forum ever had....like 100x more.

Come to think of it, I wonder if this would have been a better idea for a separate project to take on a life of its own, much like VibrantVictoria.

We could consider that and then link back into this forum. Let's just see how it pans out over a little while.

Yeah, totally. If there's a will by the members here to help broaden the scope we could definitely support something.

Something more like www.vibrantvictoria.ca/forum

I'm not familiar with C2E, but it may be the same idea. VV.ca is very urban-themed and deals predominantly with development coverage but also embraces discussions on urban issues throughout the city with an even rep for entertainment, the economy, transportation, etc.

It looks like you will have too many threads. In order to comment on anything you will have to make a new thread for it.

it's going to get time to get used to this, but the only way that this new format will succeed is if we get a domain name that links back to this forum.

awhile ago, a friend of mine and i owned and operated quite a successful Canucks fan site.....but then the lock out happened and we lost a lot of members to other fan sites and Canucks.com. after the lock out, we planned on expanding our Canucks fan site as a city community website. we even went as far as buying a domain name (really great website name too), but school became more hectic and we also became quite a bit lazy.

we were planning to start out with a Vancouver community website, and then expand it for more cities starting with Toronto, Calgary, and Montreal (though there was a major language barrier). and then it'd get bigger, expanding it to other cities around the world....and sooner or later we'd be rolling in piles of money.

well, at least that was the dream.

In the long run that will help with organization. It'll be really nice to look back at the Shangri-La thread six months from now and see the progression of conversations without having to piece things together from one major thread.

This is a change and it will take some getting used to but this format has proven to expand the breadth of conversations and involve more forumers on other similar forums.

I'm going to say the C2E and vv look very similar at first glance. I look forward to see where this initiative goes here on SSP (alot of c2e'ers come from here SSP)

Just a suggestion, the Skyscraperpage banner needs a re-do. I know you guys are still working on forum upgrades and you might already be working on this, but the banner needs to be more appealing....

The Local Vancouver banner looks great btw.

I personally love this format. while the general discussion thread was nice for just about everything, I got tired of information being lost after awhile. This way it will be a lot easier to look the information up, as well as find old topics when something new related to it comes up.

Plus it is less of a headache. I'm sure those that don't like it so far will get used to it in time. No one honestly likes change, some people just get used to it easier and faster than others.

And yes, this place needs it's own domain name!

We are indeed redesigning the banner for the forum. The new SSP redesign is slated for release this Fall.

As a regular on vibrantvictoria.ca, I will say that this format does take a bit of getting used to. But in the end I get a lot more out of it. I can access information for more easily because it's already pre-categorized/ organized.
The original format tends to alienate newcomers because it's almost impossible to pick up on a long strung "conversation" that began back in page one- page eight- page fifteen, whatever. This way newbies/ regulars can familiarize/ remind themselves with the history of a project or subject.
There are long term advantages for regulars because they're able to reference back very easily. Plus you can start a new topic without feeling as if you're braking the rhythm of a topic already in progress.
This new format just as easy as the old one, it's just a matter of getting used to it.
