If this cost is divided by 100 then Mangalore should get rupees 1.3 lakh crores investments to become smart if my calculation is right!

But another report says Smart cities to attract over Rs 2-lakh crore investments: Naidu. In this case amount of investment is just rupees 2,000 crores.

CAMPCO to enhance chocolate plant capacity

Name of the developer: M/s. Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB)

Location: Mangalore, Karnataka

Basic facts: Formal approval to the developer was granted on 26th June, 2006. The SEZ stands notified as on date. The developer has been granted six extensions validity period of which is upto 26th June, 2015.

The developer has requested for further extension so as to implement the project.

The developer has made following investments/plans.

(i) The power infrastructure works in the SEZ area are fully completed
(ii) 95% road works are completed and balance 5% of road works are under progress
(iii) Construction of compound wall is almost completed except 2.27% which is expected to be completed shortly.
(iv) 95% of water supply works are to be completed and balance 5% work is under brisk progress.
(v) An investment of Rs. 30.87 crores has been made on developmental works by February, 2015.
(vi) The co-developer has completed six floors of IT park building. The balance work is expected to be completed by May, 2015.

DC CSEZ has recommended the proposal for extension by one year.

The request of the developer is accordingly placed before BoA for its consideration.

Plastic-polymer park likely for Mangaluru
State told to give land for polymer park in Mangaluru

Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizer H.N. Ananth Kumar on Thursday said the Union government was prepared to set up a polymer park here if the State government provided 150 acres of land.

Mr. Kumar said the park to be set up at a cost of Rs. 1,000 crore would provide employment to over 20,000 people. “I visited the factory today. I had a discussion with officials from Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Ltd. If the State government provides land near MRPL, we can set up the park here,” he said.

“Why not MCF double its production by using the feedstock provided by MRPL.” Mr. Kumar said the Centre was committed to setting up the polymer park and increasing the capacity of MCF.

CHENNAI: In a move that would help change the skyline of coastal cities like Chennai, Vishakhapatnam, Surat, Mangaluru and Puducherry, the Union Environment Ministry has amended the coastal regulation zone norms to permit construction of high-rise buildings in CRZ II areas - developed areas within 500 metres of the high tide line along the coast that fall predominantly within corporation and municipal limits.

This could help tourism sector growth in Mangalore. Some of the stalled projects like IAS Hotels & Resorts may resumed if they conform with amended regulations.

The association drew attention of the minister to the fact that there is adequate land available at Kuthethur near MRPL which KIADB has revoked from JESCO and this land can be utilized for setting up of the Polymer Park.

With commissioning of polypropylene petrochemicals complex in the city at MRPL and further expansion of plant to manufacture polyethylene and other polymer products, setting up Polymer Park is crucial and also beneficial with respect of industrial development and job creation in this region.

Meeting to plan ways to get cities included in Smart Cities project

Once a city is selected under the project, the Centre will provide Rs. 100 crore every year for five years for the overall development of the city concerned. The State government has mentioned Kalaburagi, Bengaluru, Hubli-Dharwad, Vijayapura. Mangaluru, and Mysuru cities in its proposal to the Centre seeking inclusion of these in the list of 100 cities that the Centre plans to develop as smart cities.

That means Karnataka govenment has finalized its quota of six sities. And now these cities have to compete with others to get into first round of 20 cities. If not selected in first round then will go to second round and if again failed then third round. If does not get selected even in third round then they will not be a Smart City.

Mangalore can also get Rs. 100 crores from AMRUT project. Smart City project fund will be Rs. 480 crores from the center for a duration of 5 years and the state government contribution of an equal amount and PPP investments.

A couple of years back I was reading an article on pollution in a news paper. There the author had suggested we can reduce the air pollution by bringing down the truck movements by growing vegetables and other food grains within or nearer to city.

And Mangalore MP also has a plan to surround Mangalore with an agriculture zone.

If Pashchima Vahini project is implemented then I feel SAZ has potential to grow vegetable supply for the undivided south canara districts even if Mangalore city population grows by another 15-20 lakhs assuming farmers will not opt for commercial corps exclusively.

Mangalore is a port city hence we can not restrict truck movements totally but can reduce it in this way.

Coconut park planned in Dakshina Kannada district

Speaking at the coconut farmers and entrepreneurs meet organised by Coconut Development Board here on Saturday, he said the park would come up on 50 to 100 acre land, where entrepreneurs will set up units related to value added products like coconut powder, coconut milk, virgin coconut oil and will market it. This is an attempt to promote coconut farmers, value added products and marketing of the products.

He said farmers in the region have not made use of the potential of value-added products from coconut. There is an ample of opportunity for value added products. There is a proposal to set up Special Agriculture Zone in the region to emphasise on agriculture sector.

I wish Pilikula heritage village can augument plans to encourge coconut shell crafts, coir products, crokery and cutlery.

There are so many other husk and shell products like pots, pellets, grow bag blocks, bio-plastics. There is a bottled coconut water supplier in nearby Kasargod. There are so many other food products like coconut jaggery, jam, honey, chips or flakes, cookies, chutney powder. And beautiproducts like moisturisers, shower gels, shampoos, exfoliators, detergents and surfactants.

‘Tremendous scope for making value-added products’

There is a huge scope for making value-added products from coconut milk, said Chairman of Kochi-based Coconut Development Board T.K. Jose here on Saturday, especially as a country like the United States makes 65 products from it.

Addressing coconut growers and entrepreneurs at a meeting at the College of Fisheries, he said though the country had vast scope for supplying coconut milk, it imports it from small countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam.

Mr. Jose said the country had enough opportunity for making tablets of virgin coconut oil. At present, there is only one unit in the country which manufactures such tablets.

Even tender coconut water can be processed and sold as a health drink. Now, the country had 23 such units.
