Not only that, but they seem to have major international flights going to and from Calgary as well. That new runway and their expanding terminal is definitely helping their cause.

Well, they should get weekly service started, so they can see how much more they need.

Considering that Air Canada has gone to the wall to prevent Emirates and its regional counterparts from entering the Canadian market, I'd say it's pretty unlikely. And even if they did manage to crack Canada open, there would be more pent-up demand in the larger markets... in other words, we won't get service until Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Van are maxed out. But more to the point, if our passenger count can't sustain a flight to Europe there is no chance it can sustain one to Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

Didn't Canada 3000 fly to HNL with there A330's back in the day? I think WestJet could def do it once a week with their 767s

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but I am all for some cheaper flights in Canada. Just as an example, I paid $460 round trip for 6 days to New Orleans in September for a conference and $575 to Edmonton in July for 3 days for work meetings. Ridiculous!

Mr. Solloway said regional routes where Air Canada and WestJet operate Bombardier Q400 turboprops have left the two major carriers in a weakened position because consumers prefer jet service over the noisier turboprops.
I don't think this little air line has thought things through. Fuel burn is all that matters.

When I read an article about them having raised enough capital to actually start running, I will care. Right now, they are just a media outlet. At least Porter had capital committed when it was at this phase of development. And flying direct into Red Deer? The terminal was overwhelmed by the flight of 17 people I was on through there during the holidays.

I don't think so. There are people who will not fly on turboprops - I'm one of them. If an airline I use switches to turboprops I'll switch airlines, that instant. I don't care if I have to cram into a Citation. Both the LF sound and the stroboscopic effect of the prop blades make me sick for days after.

Believe me, I'm not alone.

There was a runway incursion at YWG yesterday. A WestJet 737 was on approach for landing when a WestJet Encore Q400 entered a secured area resulting in the 737 needing to go-around. The TSB has been called to investigate.

Interesting - I prefer flying of turboprops because I like the noise and vibration. I find it gives you a "cosy'er" feel that often lulls me to sleep. I always have a hard time falling asleep on jets.

The other added benefit of turboprops is they are inherently safer due to the slower take off and landing speeds.

Master plan for the next 20 years? Isn't the new terminal 90% of that plan?
