Today two of Oakland's largest events - the Oakland Black Cowboy Parade and Oaktoberfest - happened at the same time on opposite sides of town. Needless to say I took the bus...
Oaktoberfest celebrates the German heritage of Dimond (my neighborhood) with beer, concession stand food, dancing and other stuff. It has been instrumental in raising the awareness of Dimond as an urban village of sorts smack dab in the middle of East Oakland.
The Oakland Black Cowboy Festival has been running for 37 years... it is the only festival of its kind in the world. It celebrates the forgotten contribution of African Americans to the Wild West, so what better place to celebrate it in than De Fremery Park in West Oakland, arguably the most prominent historical center of the west coast's black population. A little known fact is that Oakland has a large equestrian community, and most of them are black.
Anyway, this is how I spent my Saturday in Oakland... hope you enjoy the pics.
