Dubai doesn't seem like a pedestrian place. For being a city approaching 2 million, there are very few people on the the streets. How come they don't build any ground level retait in the buildings?

that's actually a common misconception, a city this large isn't based entirely on cars. old dubai seems like it has a pretty strong pedestrian population and other areas around as well.

as for the marina, it looks like it could be one of the better pedestrian friendly developments. not sure since i've never been, but the proximity of the buildings provide shade from the sun during summer days, and i imagine from the wind as well (unless there's a wind-tunnel effect between the towers). i think what the marina lacks is some grocery shops, and local retail that residents will frequently visit, rather than a mall.

whatever happened to the mall anyways? will it be another empty complex? they should've mandated retail space in every tower so they could use that lot for a plaza, park, or something besides more retail space (although i imagine it'd be a pretty popular place due to location).

I remember seeing a shopping mall near the exit of the metro station. I didn't go inside, so, I have no idea if it's already busy.
Some completed towers include retail space. I've seen a Carrefour supermarket at the foot of a building.
I guess that more retail will come in the near future.

you have the rather large Marina mall very close to the metro station.

it has about 400 shops and u also got shops and restaurants here and there along the canal.

and some along Jumeirah beach in and around the 40+ post modern Highrises.

and u can rather easily walk around it all during cool days and the winter

Another Dubai giant. It's nice to see this city rise even in these economically troubling times Is there any recent progress? All pics here are kinda old

According to Skyscraper City, as of last week, the workers have left. Sadly, Pentominium is now on hold.

I dont think the picture is as nice as it's seem, it's quite a slow process considering the fact that this project has been proposed for over many years now and you'd think that it's almost surpassed the 40th floors or something by this time
