How common is it for immigrant communities to have links between Canadian & US cities
Both now and in the recent past few generations.
For example, Italian Americans in NYC's metro area with Italian Canadian family in Toronto, or Montreal, or the same for Jewish Americans and Canadians?
Or Portuguese Americans in New England having Canadian kin in Toronto.
Or Haitian and Jamaican Americans on the east coast of the US, NYC or Miami, having Canadian relatives in Montreal and Toronto.
Or Chinese Americans in the Bay Area and their Canadian relatives in Vancouver?
I suspect that it might be common when the same immigration wave arrives at both countries at the same time (eg. post-war Italians in New York city's metro and Toronto) but not when they are from separate waves in different cities (eg. earlier 20th century Italians in Chicago and those in Toronto).
It also might be less common for situations where one country has a larger immigrant population of one origin than the other. For example, Mexican Americans might be less likely to have Mexican Canadian family, but instead have all the family they know in the US. Or maybe Sri Lankan Canadians in the Greater Toronto area are less likely to have family in the US, and Cuban-Americans are less likely to have family in Canada, since Canada accepted more refugees from Sri Lanka and the US accepted more refugees from Cuba.
