If Newark was located closer to Philly or Baltimore rather than in the shadow of New York, it would be considered one of the heavyweights of the East Coast.

a little touch i really like about the housing here is that even though the homes almost all have that crappy aluminum siding, the lower half of the house front is often all tilework. you can see that in one example up there. i like looking at it while walking around, its interesting and livens it up.

It looks so......Jersey.

Fun tour, thanks mrnyc. I was wondering about the castle-type building at the end?

that is the iberian peninsula restaurant, the biggest restaurant in the 'hood by far lol! i noticed the huge parking lot on ferry street, the ironbounds' main drag, was filled up with stages and beer garden type stuff for the summer, which looked a lot more inviting than a big parking lot:

^ i never ate there, i always make a point to shop at seabras, a mammoth brazilian grocery store and then i usually stop at this place to eat - highly recommended if yr ever in the ironbound. it's...how can i describe it? real. and real good too:

^ Thanks for the info. btw, the steak & fries combo was popular with myself & my buddies during port visits to both Recife Brazil and Lisbon. (Maybe that's because we were rather inebriated at the time, LOL).

Nice tour. I once attempted a glorious stack of meat in this neighborhood, but couldn't finish it. It's kind of too bad that the tacky, vinyl-siding part of town is Newark's most vibrant area, while the more elegantly built sections got hoodified.

Yea, you won't see any "Keep Newark Weird" bumper stickers around, thankfully.

Forest Hill isn't what I call "hoodified." I don't get why people think the Ironbound is the ONLY stable section of town.

I didn't say "stable", I said "vibrant". Lovely as it is, no one is heading to Forest Hill for a night on the town.

PS you forgot to take the OP to task for not including a photo of NJPAC. Every Newark thread has to include at least one. Forum law.

(kidding! You're a good guy, Marv. NJ cities need supporters.)

I love my birth place. I remember my father taking us all to chinese restaurant for the first time on Bergen Street and seeing Santa Claus at Bamberger's. Love your pics. Never knew why NJ uses so much of that aluminum siding!
