El Paso's $85 million WestStar Tower office building should be finished by summer 2020

Vic Kolenc, El Paso Times Published 8:00 a.m. MT June 21, 2018 | Updated 11:53 a.m. MT June 21, 2018

The construction of the $85 million, 18-story WestStar Tower office building will begin in about two weeks.

That's the projected start time after many of the city's business and government leaders celebrated the project's symbolic groundbreaking on a hot Wednesday morning under a white tent on a blacktop parking lot at 601 N. Mesa St. and Missouri Avenue, where the building will be constructed.

That address was scaring me for a second. I thought they were going to have to tear down the Coffee Box. Thankfully, it's two blocks away on Mesa St.

The 9-story high-rise a first in more than 35 years

The Courtyard by Marriott Downtown El Paso hotel, the first privately-owned high-rise built in Downtown in more than 35 years, opened Friday.

Owned by El Paso businessmen Elma Carreto and Jim Scherr, the 151-room hotel features a pool deck, fitness center, lobby bar, meeting space and views of the Downtown ballpark. It also includes 100 parking spaces and a “magnificent” penthouse suite, according to a news release.
