Maybe I should give up on this thread. This latest proposal/concept design is the best so far IMO. It's 490m!! Also it's for SZR but would be prefect for the business bay centrepiece. It would look weird on SZR with it's massive base. I really find the architecture of these is always improving (with the exception of the al yacoub monstrosity though ). It's a pity that this looks more like a concept design or an entry for a competition because it would most likely be the best tower in Dubai (unless a better one pops up in the future )

A comparrison with today's tallest tallies:

BTW, if you support better pay, better living conditions, etc of the labours who are building these great towers then go here to show your support.

A reason for the demand, as I was told by a major architect at a major firm, is that many people in other Persian Gulf countries want an "out" if their government goes (I read that as Saudi and perhaps Iran into that statement). They buy places-plural-for family members (even children) so that there is a place to go in emergency. Piling on to the effect is that these same people are putting part of their savings into Dubai investments, too.

I don't know about that but I do know the reason for the demand there is because of a quickly increasing expatriate population (which not including labourers still makes up most of the population). Also because of this don't expect the population growth to follow any of the usual trends.

Of course even with this population surge (more than 100,000 a year) it still isn't enough to fill all these project and I'll bet some will be scaled back.

I like the design of that new supertall, but agree with you that it seems wasted on SZR. It would look much better in Business Bay.

The chance that this will get built is less than 1/10 simply because on the architect's website it says that this was a competition entry. Who knows though.

A little bit of news.

Burj Al Alam has 108 floors and is 480m high. I've already posted this in it's own thread in the highrises subforum.

Also more than likely, the unnamed damac tower and ocean heights 2 are the same tower and will likely be a combination of the designs. We'll have to wait

Forgot about this thread.

Burj al alam will actually be 484m high, from their website.

Some bad news, the al rafi complex was cancelled because it wasn't given approval due to its height. This is probably because it's under a cap due to the airport. Instead there will be a 55-storey tower.

There's a good chance al durrah will suffer the same fate because it's in the same area.
For those wondering about park square tower it most likely bit the dust long ago since this was to be twice the height of the al rafi and also closer to the airport.

Also this is not confirmed but apparently najd tower was cancelled and the guys building "le reve" (the most way out of your league tower in dubai) have bought the plot. There has been nothing from najd tower for a year so will take it off the list too.

That's too bad, but you had to expect some of these proposals to fall through. It's probably better in the long run for the market to start having some small negative effects on the building activity in Dubai. It may prevent them from overbuilding (which many people think they are doing now) and create a more stable, sustainable building market. Besides, there are still a ton of great projects still moving forward. Let's just hope that we don't lose any more good designs like the one above.

Dubai has so many great, original, ground-breaking towers, and then we get this, a blatant copy. I like the taller version, but c'mon.

The design is not that bad. Nothing great but not an eyesore either.
It's just another one of Dubai's decorated boxes but should fit well with the surroundings.

No more need for this thread. The first image in this thread says all about what dubai will look like in the future.

Dubai unveils $33 bln airport city

DUBAI (Reuters) - Gulf tourism and trade hub Dubai said on Tuesday it plans to invest $33 billion in building what it said would be the world's largest airport and city in Jebel Ali, home to the region's biggest free-trade zone.

A statement by organizers of the state-run project, Dubai World Central, said the multi-phase 140 sq km (54 square mile) development around the planned international airport will include a cargo city, residential and commercial quarters and a Golf course.

Dubai is pouring hundreds of billions of dollars into infrastructure and real estate developments, making it home to an estimated 17 percent of the world's cranes.

"Dubai World Central International Airport (JXB) ... when complete will be the world's largest with a capacity equal to that currently of Chicago's O'Hare and London's Heathrow (combined)," it said.

"Dubai World Central will be a new city where eventually some 750,000 people will live and work," it said, adding the project was designed to support Dubai's aviation, tourism, commercial and logistics requirements until 2050.

The airport will have a capacity of 120 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo per year. It will have six 4.5 kilometer runways capable of receiving all aircraft, including the double-decker Airbus 380.

The three-terminal airport will dedicate one of its hubs to low-cost airlines, it said. It will be linked to the Dubai International Airport via an express rail system.

Passenger traffic at Dubai International Airport increased 14 percent in 2005 to 24 million people compared with 2004.

The airport expects 28 million passengers and 1.5 million tonnes of freight in 2006.

I'm going to redo this thread. I got pissed off a few days ago because of that project with the shitty tallest building replicas. I'll ignore that project and any others like it in this thread and focus on the REAL towers of dubai. I'll divide it into 2 sections, the marina area and burj dubai area since they'll be 2 seperate skylines. I'll also put "other" towers at the bottom of the list
