Training in using modern equipment soon

Quote:
THIRUVANATHAPURAM: The ever-vigilant guardians on the beaches who have till date been battling the waves with nothing but a life buoy and their sheer skills are likely to be upgraded soon. Rashtriya Life-Saving Society (RLSS), a national organisation associated with water safety, life-saving and life-guarding skills and a wing of Royal Life-Saving Society (Commonwealth), has reached an agreement with Kerala Institute of Travel and Tourism Studies(KITTS) to give formal training to life guards who are being employed on contract basis by the Tourism Department.

The first phase of training will be given to lifeguards who are employed on the beaches in Thiruvananthapuram. Subsequently, lifeguards from other parts of the State will also be trained in separate batches. Lifeguards will be trained on using advanced equipment in life-saving like rescue tubes, rescue boards, flippers, spinal management board and advanced first aid kit.

National trainers of RLSS will be conducting classes on upgrading the skills of lifeguards. A certificate qualifying them as trained life-savers will also be issued at the end of the training period. The training is proposed to begin in May. The entire concept of the programme is modelled on the activities of Life Saving Victoria, the water safety initiative in Australia.

This is the first time lifeguards in Kerala will be given a formal training on upgrading the life-saving techniques. Currently, around 150 lifeguards are employed across the beaches in the State. ‘’The Tourism Department has been mulling over upgrading the skills of lifeguards in the State. It was then that KITTS proposed jointly working with RLSS in this regard,’’ said R Anilkumar, secretary, RLSS, Kerala chapter.

The main objective of RLSS is to refurbish the sagging image of lifeguards in Kerala. ‘’All these years, they have been throwing themselves into the sea without even a rope. They may be good swimmers, but they are too weak when it comes to handling modern life-saving equipment and first aid measures. This is where lifeguards in Kerala need to go through a dramatic change,’’ said Anilkumar.

RLSS also hopes that the natural swimming skills, coupled with procurement of advanced life-saving techniques, will together lift the status and honour of their profession. ‘’We are working on a proposal on ensuring better remuneration for the lifeguards in the State. The proposal will soon be handed over to Tourism Department,’’ he added.

Besides, talks are already on with schools in the city regarding swimming lessons for schoolchildren from class II to V. Classes will be held once in a week, totalling twenty lessons. RLSS Kerala chapter has already reached agreements with some city schools to introduce swimming classes by the beginning of the next academic year.

‘’KITTS has decided to include life-saving in the regular course of travel and tourism management. We want to create a pool of trained professionals from which Tourism Department and other stakeholders in tourism can recruit them on a permanent basis,’’ said Anilkumar.

Tharoor woos Oracle to Trivandrum

Quote:
The rumour has been confirmed. Oracle Corporation, the second largest information technology company in the world, will start operations in Kerala from June.

Sources confirmed to Deccan Chronicle the company will start operations from a rented facility at Technopark here in June and will move to Leela Park, in the Technopark’s campus itself, by September.

Oracle provides business software and hardware systems and has more than 3,70,000 customers representing a variety of sizes and industries in more than 145 countries around the globe. To start with, the company will impart training to a group of 50 IT professionals. It will then scale up the number of professionals to 200. Based on ground experience, the company will later decide on when and where to set up its own campus, said highly placed sources.

Former Union minister Shashi Tharoor had helped the state IT department to rope in Oracle Corporation. Mr Tharoor had offered his service to Kerala IT for presenting the state as a potential destination for the US-based Oracle Corporation. In a video conference arranged at Technopark here, Mr Tharoor presented the business potential of Kerala to Oracle Corporation senior vice-president Thomas Kurian.

The entry of an IT giant like Oracle is bound to create a spurt in the setting up of top technology companies in the region and industry sources said Oracle’s decision to set shop in Kerala would definitely prompt other top-level companies like Accenture, Google and IBM to start their operations here.

City painting its roof white

Quote:
THIRUVANATHAPURAM: The city is painting its roof white to beat the heat this summer. Sun shield paints which claim to reduce the room temperature by six to seven degrees are being sold by the litres in the city with the onset of the dog days. And if experiments with paint are to be believed, mercury levels in homes drop considerably with the bleached roofs.

Santha Paint House, one of the biggest retailers in the city, says that the sales of heat reduction paints of various brands have gone up with more and more people opting for it as the next best thing to centralised air conditioning. Says Vijayakumar, paint consultant and managing partner of Santha Paint House: ‘’Heat shield paints that could be used on roofs have been available for some years now. But, now there is an increased awareness among people about such products. The paints, marketed by top-notch companies, can reduce the temperature by six to seven degrees in the house.’’

The paints that come under the heat shield category cost between Rs 400 - 450 per litre and can be used only on an area of about 30 sq ft. The material cost for painting a roof of about 1,000 sq ft can range from Rs 40,000 - 50,000. But cost is not hindering people from buying the product, says Vijayakumar. ‘’Any good exterior emulsion will cost you about the same. People are ready to spend money on a product worth its price,’’ he said. He adds that another option is to use any white exterior paint on the roof. ‘’White paints, if laid thickly, can reduce heat to a great extend. The expense also will be around half of what it takes to use the original heat reduction paints.’’

However, users have found ways to beat the cost factor. Says Thomas Abraham, an ISRO engineer who lives in PTP Nagar: ‘’The terrace of my house comes to over 2,000 sq ft. If the paint is diluted and used over a larger area, we will not get the desired effect. So, what I did was to lay two coats of paint on the roof of the bedrooms.’’ Abraham, however, vouches for excellent results. ‘’It is certainly much cooler now. It had been almost impossible to sleep through the sultry nights, let alone the steamy afternoons. I am thinking of painting the whole terrace,’’ he said.

Abraham cut the cost factor further by donning the painter’s hat himself. Saji, a businessman who painted the whole roof of his house at Nanthencode, also did the work by himself. “It feels much less balmy in the day time and definitely cool in the nights,’’ he says.

Since not everyone can pull off the painting by themselves, heat reduction paints have brought a windfall for painters too this season. Ramachandran, a painter for over 30 years, says his brush has had a busy schedule this summer, thanks to the painting spree in the city. ‘’I get a contract almost every other week these days. So many people are using the paint on the roof, such is the heat, you know. From my experience, I think the composition of these paints can help prevent leaks too. It is a good substitute for Bitumin, which was earlier used on roofs to cover fault lines,’’ he said.

With mercury levels soaring, more roofs in the city are sure to go white in the coming days. Perhaps, the poll camps can go for the paints to bring down the heat levels too.

Thumbs up Rs 9-crore DST grant for Kerala University

Quote:
THIRUVANATHAPURAM: Kerala University has been selected for a grant of Rs nine crore by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Union Government under the Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence (PURSE)programme.

The grant was sanctioned on a proposal submitted by Dr. V Prasannakumar, director of Research of the university.

The proposal, formulated in consultation with the heads of science departments, aims at augmenting shareable and expensive analytical facilities that are essential for improving research in various departments.

Prasannakumar told ‘Express’ that the grant would improve the quality of research in inter-disciplinary areas. It will also help in expanding research to more areas, he said.

PURSE programme promotes value-added proactive measures through Research and Department Incentive Grant. It provides substantive research grant to universities in appreciation of their R & D contributions.

Under the PURSE programme, DST intends to provide support to performing universities across the country, essentially for research, man power costs, augmentation of equipment and computational facilities, research consumables, organisation of scientific conferences, workshops, travel and maintenance of facilities. Kerala University will get Rs nine crore distributed in the above heads for three years.

PURSE provides substantive research grant to universities on the basis of scientific publications in Science Citation Indexed Journals through SCOPUS Database.

India is ranked 12th among the top 20 countries in Science and Technology, according to a study conducted by the National Institute of Science, Technology and Development Studies, New Delhi, on Publication Output in SCOPUS International Database for a period of ten years. SCOPUS considers H-Index as a means to evaluate research performance. The H-index attempts to measure both scientific productivity and apparent scientific impact of a researcher.

The H-index is based on the researcher’s most cited papers and the number of citations the papers’ received in other publications. The index can also be applied to judge the impact and productivity of a group of researchers at a department or university.

14 universities were supported under PURSE programme during 2009-2010 on the basis of a study conducted by NISTADS, New Delhi, on Publication Output in SCOPUS International Database between 1996 and 2006. The programme is now in operation in these universities.

The DST recently conducted a study through NISTADS for analysing the performance of universities using the H-index as an indicator through SCOPUS Database during 1998- 2008. 30 new universities which have H-index ranging from 42 to 26, have been identified for support during 2010-2011.

Engineering students develop regenerative braking system

Quote:

Commendable feat: The team of Electrical Engineering students at Sarabhai Engineering College, in the city, which developed an electric scooter.

Thiruvananthapuram: A team of final year Electrical Engineering students at Sarabhai Engineering College here has developed an electrical scooter with a regenerative braking system that promises better efficiency and longer range of operation.

The team, comprising Aswathy Chandran, Binosh Mohan, Neena G.K, Parvathy V and Vaishak Murali, claims that the scooter developed by them will help to overcome most of the inherent drawbacks of electric vehicles.

The students say the driving unit of the scooter employs newly developed circuits that are more durable and efficient.

The driving MOSFETs (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors) are controlled by an optocoupler via a microcontroller. As a result, the system can be operated on 12 V compared to the 48 V currently in use in other electric vehicles.

The regenerative braking system used in the vehicle is a unique feature that charges the battery every time the brake is applied. “The electrical braking system is more efficient than the conventional mechanical braking,” Binosh Mohan says.

Another feature of the scooter is regenerative charging. While running, the motor acts as a generator and charges the battery. The vehicle includes a digital display system that shows the load level, voltage and speed.

The students were guided in their project by A. Renjith, lecturer.

Students develop amphibian two-wheeler

Quote:
Surface no bar: This team from the Sarabhai Institute of Science and Technology developed a two-wheeler which can operate on land and water.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fancy a two-wheeler that you can ride on both the city roads and backwaters? Then, the Sarabhai Institute of Science and Technology is the place to stop by: a group of students of the Mechanical Engineering department here has developed what they call an ‘amphibian two-wheeler'.

The vehicle that was designed by C. Shyam Mohan, S. Arun, V.R. Rahul and C.S. Vishnu uses a 100 cc two-stroke petrol engine for its operations, both on land and water. This, the team says, is the forte of this vehicle.

Though the body of the two-wheeler shares common features with regular two-wheelers, there are things that set it apart: the chassis, two floats and a rear wheel that can also be called the ‘water wheel.' The vehicle can carry only one person. Prior to plunging the ‘amphibian' on to a water body, the rider should first lower the two floats attached to the chassis. This can be done by operating a lever. The ride on water is also made easier by the water wheel. In short, the transition from land to water can be made without complications.

This vehicle costs between Rs.25,000 and Rs.30,000. It took the students a year to develop this model and they were aided in their project by K. Gopalakrishna Pillai, professor of mechanical engineering.
