Ridership on individual bus lines that may be of interest:

RTD 15/15L..............26,000*
FlatIron Flyer ..........14,400*
Boulder SKIP.............5,300*
Fort Collins MAX BRT...3,850*
VelociRFTA BRT..........2,100*~
Any others we should add?

Source data and methodology notes:
  • Base data is from APTA and is from the 2nd quarter of 2016.
  • Since not every city reports to APTA, alternate sources are noted with a clickable * where necessary.
  • If only yearly ridership data is available, I divided it by 300 to approximate a weekday average. These numbers are indicated via a ~ where they appear.
  • Numbers are rounded, although the scale of rounding varies according to scale of ridership. The precision doesn't matter; these are ballpark figures.

Have some pictures just for fun:

For the record, I left out a lot of tiny ones. For example, La Junta has a bus system, of sorts. It appears to be single one-way loop route around town, coming once every 45 minutes. I suspect it only runs 1 bus at a time, ever (there's probably a second in reserve). It's a demand-response hybrid that will leave its designated route if you call ahead and request it. It doesn't run on weekends. On Fridays it goes to WalMart. Ridership is about 100 per day. It appears to be mainly for seniors. I can't find a picture of the bus.

Here is a picture of the bus in Lamar. This is strictly demand response, so there are not routes or schedules. But they've got this photo.

Prowers Area Transit

I also discovered an intercity line called the Beeline Express that runs between Pueblo and Wichita, with stops at the larger towns along Route 50.

I want to take the Beeline Express some day. Nothing like the best of Kansas. Plus, my Born To Be Wild days are a distant memory.

Southwest states
AZ and NM aren't Mountain West states, but just for fun, here are the notable ones for those states:

CITY...........................BUS..............RAIL
Phoenix PTD+VM...........154,000.........49,000
Tucson MTS+Sun Link.....57,000..........4,000*
Albuquerque T&PD+DOT...38,500..........2,800
Santa Fe Trails.................3,000*~ (Rail Runner counted as part of ABQ)

All the states are now reflected in the main list in the first post.

Ridiculous routing with limited service give few incentives to ride. No Sunday service and most service ends on weekdays at 7pm. But don't worry they just built an expensive underground transit mall and now want to build an expensive Downtown trolley.

Boise compared to peers

I'm curious about how poorly Boise performs relative to its peers.

Boise is the 109th largest urban area in the United States, with about 350,000 people. Let's just look at others with a comparable population (excluding resorts or any that are arguably suburbs of larger places) and see what sort of ridership they get.

Code:
CITY RIDERS/DAY

Boise 4,650

Modesto CA 12,100*~
Flint MI 16,500
Jackson MS 2,000*~
Pensacola FL 5,100*~
Mobile AL 4,000*~
Crps Chrisi TX	20,000
So not the worst, but definitely in that lower tier.

But none of those are northwestern cities. Lets expand the population search a little to see the comparables that are closer geographically.

Code:
CITY RIDERS/DAY	UA POPULATION
Reno NV 20,400 392,000
Spokane WA	35,500 388,000

Eugene OR 35,100 247,000
Salem OR 12,100 237,000
Put all this together and it's hard to make a case that Boise isn't underperforming. But let's normalize by population. That'll be interesting regardless of this Boise question.

Ridership per capita for major western cities & Boise comparables:

Lets do some per capita calculations. I'm going to switch to metro areas for this (rather than urbanized areas), because the huge service areas for Denver, Phoenix, and SLC require using the CSA subset of metro areas to reflect their full coverage areas. It's as close to an apples-to-apples way to do it as possible.

Code:
CITY RIDERS/DAY	POPULATION	RIDES PER PERSON PER DAY
Boulder 33,000 319,372 .103 (included in RTD; this is a subset)
Eugene 35,100 362,895 .097
Denver 329,000 3,418,876 .096
Spokane 35,500 547,924 .065
Tucson 61,000 1,010,025 .060
SLC 142,000 2,467,709 .058
Phoenix 203,000 3,629,114 .056
Logan 6,700 133,857 .050
Albuquerque 41,000 907,301 .045
Reno 20,400 450,890 .045
Crps Christi 20,000 452,422 .044
Flint 16,500 410,849 .040
Ft Collins 11,400 333,577 .034 (includes Loveland)
Salem 12,100 410,091 .030
Modesto 12,100 538,388 .022
Pueblo 3,300 163,591 .020
Grnd Junction 2,400 148,513 .016
Colo Spgns 10,600 697,856 .015
Pensacola 5,100 478,043 .011
Mobile 4,000 415,395 .010
Boise 4,650 676,909 .007
Jackson 2,000 578,777 .003

Very cool! Awesome that you put this together.

Numbers are out for Transfort's 2016 ridership in Fort Collins- about a 25% jump to 4,083,000. Using your methodology that's about 13,460 daily weekday.

The link I posted only has updated Q4 numbers so far- the written analysis on the webpage still is about Q3. If we take the info from Q3 stating there was a 67% increase in MAX ridership from 2015 and combine it with the 3,850 daily number you provided there is a possibility of 2016 MAX daily numbers being as high as 6,430.

That's very impressive. Fort Collins is one of a few places that "I wish I had moved to" although the more moderate climate of Prescott appeals. Boise would be third thanks to Sawtooth's photography.
