AUSTIN -- It is pretty noticeable, appearing as a hole on Congress Avenue right now, but it is set to be the newest JW Marriott Austin come 2015, the largest hotel in Austin.

The 1.2 million-square-foot facility will feature 1,012 guest rooms. The Convention and Visitors Bureau said with 35 meeting rooms, it will be a huge selling point for businesses who are unable to book at the Convention Center, but who are still interested in Austin.

71,000 rooms are already booked for the new JW Marriott, that has to be some kind of record.

^Also with 1.2 million square feet of space, this might be the biggest building in downtown. I think the biggest now is the Omni Hotel with 990,000 square feet. This hotel is going to have more than twice as much space as the Frost Bank Tower.

JW Marriott Austin celebrates official groundbreaking
Hotel to be Austin’s largest to date

By Shonda Novak
American-Statesman Staff

The $300 million JW Marriott Austin had its official groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, with dignitaries lauding the anticipated economic benefits of the 1,012-room convention hotel at Congress Avenue and Second Street downtown.

The 34-story JW Marriott will be the largest hotel in Austin — and the largest JW Marriott in the U.S. — to date, said officials with the developer, Indiana-based White Lodging Services Corp.

The hotel is expected to generate 2,500 jobs during its two-year construction. Upon opening in early 2015, it will employ more than 700 people. Construction started on the 1.2-million square-foot hotel in August.

Tower crane base was delivered over the weekend. It's been put into place. They'll probably have at least one of the cranes up by this weekend. This project has a permit for three tower cranes.

The cranes are up! It's still supposed to have a third one, probably along Congress for the podium section. They look like they're around 250 feet tall.

EDIT: they're taking the mobile crane apart, so maybe they aren't adding a third crane until later on?

I was on the Austin Compilation Thread and noticed the installation of caissons: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...199012&page=66 (Post 1314).

It is time to move this thread to "under construction".

This seems kind of unusual, but KXAN just reported that Congress Avenue would be closed in about an hour for an extended period of time this weekend so a crane can be delivered to the JW Marriott site. The two other cranes were installed with no traffic interruptions. I wonder what's different this time? I'll be checking the construction webcam:

They're putting up the 3rd tower crane this morning. The building is almost at street level on the east side of the block.

Also if you use the camera link below you can see that they've turned on the lights at the Whitley apartment tower across the street from the JW Marriott. Hyatt Place also has turned on its sign lights.

And yes, that is a spider on the camera lens. Apparently spiders have a thing for camera lenses on tower cams. I also saw one on Fox7's tower cam.
