Inland cruising will return to the Mississippi River in 2012

Published: Monday, October 04, 2010, 12:36 PM

Cruise Lines debuts an as-yet-unnamed sternwheeler in New Orleans, the company said recently.

The so-called brown-water cruise will operate a route similar to that run by the now-defunct Delta Queen Steamboat Company, with a final destination in Memphis and six stops along the way, including Baton Rouge and Natchez, Miss.

The first cruise will leave New Orleans on Aug. 11, 2012, on a seven-night trip, the company said. The vessel, which is still under construction, will accommodate 140 passengers, said Timothy Beebe, vice president of marketing for the Guilford, Conn.-based company. It will have five decks, lounges and a library.

Former New Orleans Saints Quarterback Archie Manning has teamed up with Harrah's New Orleans Hotel & Casino to open a restaurant on Fulton Street, in the casino's entertainment corridor.

Groundbreaking on Manning's is scheduled for January 2011.

The restaurant, which will feature a bar and courtyard, will open in fall 2011. The Fulton Street corridor is now home to Ruth's Chris Steak House, Gordon Biersch Restaurant, Grand Isle Restaurant, Ernst Cafe and Aidan Gill.

Interesting Im guessing since it says courtyard that this building is going to be built on the cemented area between Fulton and South Peters behind the hotel. Good riddance of another surface lot. Hopefully there will be some more announcements about the property in the future!

LCRC UPDATE
http://lcrcupdate.blogspot.com/

The exterior 'skin" of the building is 65% complete and major equipment installation and rough in is nearing completion. Installation of sheetrock has begun on the interior walls. With 162 workers on the site, overall, the project is now 60% complete and on still on schedule.

Here are some interesting statistics:

24,000 SF of glass has been installed. That's enough to fully cover 5 full size basketball courts
The building has 55,605 lineal feet of conduit (10 miles). Enough to run the entire length of St. Charles Avenue twice.
170,000 lineal feet (or 32 miles) of metal studs are in the building. If placed end to end, they would wrap around the Superdome 250 times.

pilings on Leon C. Simon at Elysian Fields

I was driving on Leon C. Simon and saw some pretty big concrete pilings sticking out of the field across from Ben Franklin High School, right by Elysian Fields. I figured this was probably something being built for UNO, but there weren't any signs. What is this going to be?

Really?! As a Franklin graduate, I can tell you: there may be an explosive blend of mosquito-control chemicals and marijuana smoke under those oak trees!

I am disappointed to hear this. I was hoping it would be something good, like an academic building. Who wants to go to school next to a mosquito-control building?

Is this the building that the city once considered purchasing for city offices?

Glad to see the former Chevron buiding being put back into commerce. That part of the CBD is kind of a dead area right now. Hoping this will spark further investment in the Tulane/Loyola part of the CBD.
