Speaking of food trucks.. there seems to be a perogy truck parked regularly before Flames games, on 12 Ave just west of the Casino. It's a less than ideal location because the only people walking by it are the cheapskates parking 20 blocks away to save $2, and Beltline residents. It entirely misses the crowds who park anywhere close or take the C-Train (or cab).

Although I suppose the Flames would shit a brick if someone tried to put a competing food vendor on the Stampede grounds itself. It's really too bad, as I'd love to try it out - but not when I have to walk 3-4 blocks away from my destination just to get to it.

Unfortunately, that's one thing I've never heard her say.

The perogy truck is, IMO, the best of the trucks. Duck perogies with Sunday sausage. Awesome. They are usually around 8th and 8th or central memorial park for lunches. If I didn't pack a lunch and either Perogy Boyz or Los Compadres Tacos are close by, I get one of them.

If you think that's big, try Rocky's Burger Bus

Whenever I see their tweets on a game day they mention how they will try to get as close as possible to the Dome, but the roads around there really limit where they can set up shop and not be violating any parking or stopping rules.

I got a french toast Omelet sandwich from the Mighty Skillet truck today, was going to get Perogy Boys, but they had a longer lineup.

My personal fave is this organic chocolate milk that they are carrying now. I had forgotten what real milk tastes like. Another time I was there, there was a local cheese maker with braided cheese that I hadn't seen before. Aviv Fried stops in from time to time from Sidewalk Citizen Bakery. The people at Bridgeland Market are great and are very attentive to the product selection.

The tin roofing looks amazing and they also put in a new bike rack out front.

Bridgeland Market routinely is trying out new products too so there is always that "what's new" factor I love about it.

I love having a shop like this a block away from home. I hope word gets out and traffic picks up in their store. I make a point of getting everything I can from there and only going to the larger stores for what bridgeland market doesnt carry. They did a fantastic job renovating the place, they know how to do quality (FYI they also own Tazza across the street).

Charpop's first location will be down around 1a St SW and 55th Ave. Which means I have to figure out how to get from the U of C, where my last class ends at 5, to that location for a 6pm seating. When it's supposed to be -20. I know this qualifies a first world problem, but I'm not thrilled. I have to- well, am committed to- take the C-Train (heading out of DT at rush hour, which I never have to contend with) and then walk the 6 or so blocks along 1A, I guess. I hope it's worth it. I pray I'm not forced to eat offal if it turns out that's all that's on the ironic, cheeky menu.

Have I mentioned that I actually hate the idea of pop-up restaurants? I do, actually.

CharPOP was really excellent. The location was, as it turns out, the storefront for Sidewalk Citizen Bakery (on 1A St SW near 55th Ave); it was completely transformed with something like 5 communal tables seating 8 persons each. It was packed but those 40 diners that were there with us were drawn from MORE THAN 3000 who tried to get seatings. For all three nights they served something like 300 people so this was great success. It's also never going to happen again- the team (with the former owner of The Black Hoof in Toronto in addition to the Charcut and Sidewalk Citizen team) is going to travel to 4 other Canadian cities to do the popup. This was truly our only chance and I have to say I'm glad to have experienced it.

We ordered a lot of food- sides of beets and potatoes au gratin, small plates of a kale salad (this was not great, kale was tough and it was way too lemony), a tuna crudo that was one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted, sweetbreads that were not exactly my thing but were pretty tasty, and two large plates of a rabbit "pie" that was just fantastic, best treatment of rabbit I've ever had, and beef cheeks that I didn't care for as the meat was very fatty and chewy, and by the time we got to that plate it was cold (remember it was -26 in a room that's not well insulated). We got both deserts on the menu, a pear gallette that was pretty good and a STUNNING cinnamon bun with raisin ice cream- could have had two. I also got to sample the blonde ale from Calgary's brand new Village Brewery and it just blew me away.

I won't miss some of what I had but the high points- the crudo, potatoes and the second dessert- were ones I wish I could order at charcut, or anywhere.

Overall- I'm not close to sold on the popup thing but wouldn't mind sampling another one, just to part of the experience.
