This thread has devolved into a shit show, I guess it's fitting considering the circumstances.

Adding the SunTimes article which actually has the statement:
http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/geo...or-his-museum/

Quote:
“No one benefits from continuing their seemingly unending litigation to protect a parking lot,” said Lucas, founder and chairman of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, in a news release. “The actions initiated by Friends of Parks and their recent attempts to extract concessions from the city have effectively overridden approvals received from numerous democratically elected bodies of government.”

The City is on the verge of BK and poverty pushers say no to a massive cultural gift. This place is really getting unbearable. I'm sure we have a long year ahead of Chuy, Karen and Sharkey demanding all sorts of tax increases though.

Thanks a lot Friends of the Parking Lots! I'm sure you're proud for pushing out an enormous gift from this city that would have not only helped it financially, but also culturally to save a parking lot. I hope you're happy Mr. D for protecting a shitty parking lot.

I can't believe the world we're living in right now.

I'll be honest, this is one case I hope the mayor is somehow vindictive toward FotPL.

I'm curious to see how things go in whichever city he chooses instead. He hasn't yet chosen another city, correct?

I think this is the best statement

“Unfortunately, time has run out and the moment we’ve consistently warned about has arrived – Chicago’s loss will be another city’s gain. This missed opportunity has not only cost us what will be a world-class cultural institution, it has cost thousands of jobs for Chicago workers, millions of dollars in economic investment and countless educational opportunities for Chicago’s youth.”

“We tried to find common ground to resolve the lawsuit – the sole barrier preventing the start of the museum’s construction. But despite our best efforts to negotiate a common solution that would keep this tremendous cultural and economic asset in Chicago, Friends of the Parks chose to instead negotiate with themselves while Lucas negotiated with cities on the West Coast.

Threy might as well go into hibernation until the next mayoral election since their political power is now less than nothing.

It was "no comment" from FotPL, btw. Guess they are waiting on Blair Kamen to write one for them.

so is there anything that we, as common folk, can do to help destroy the garbage organization that is FOTP?

Most of it is probably illegal so that's no good. I think that, honestly, the best way it would be ruined is if the museum is built wherever and becomes not only a huge success but also becomes regarded highly as an institution. Most of the other ways to ruin them would have to do around basically showing Chicagoans how they fucked the city out of a close to $1B investment, and cost thousands of jobs being created in the city. People love to complain about the economy, and something of this size pisses off enough people - especially when the city government did everything they could to make this thing a reality.

Yes, since many of us care enough to have the time to comment on these boards, I recommend contacting the donors of FOPL directly.

One of their largest is the Driehaus Foundation, which ironically, supports "Arts & Culture, the Built Environment, Economic Opportunity for the Working Poor, and Government Accountability/Investigative Reporting."

CONTACT THEM now, today, and ask them how their support of FOPL and driving away a billion dollar gift of arts and culture is consistent with their mission.

http://www.driehausfoundation.org/contact/

Can someone pull from the Crain's article info about FOPL's other donors?

I think it's only fair that FotPl be forced to leave the city as well.
