National Music Centre | 7 Floors | Construction

This is a huge and awesome project for our city, so I think it definitely deserves its own thread.

A render of the incredible project...

Here is the progress of the project as of yesterday...

Good call Chad. This one is a very exciting project indeed. It'll be nice to see all the progress.

Old thread

Here is a link to the old thread, and the first page still has renderings of the other options from the design competition.

Yeah, this is the one project that I'm most excited to see turn out. Can't wait for the exterior terracotta cladding especially.

The only thing I dislike is how they gave it such a generic name. I wish they kept the Cantos in there to give it a little more of a branded stamp for the long-term.

Haha wow! I love how the firm we got came in last place on that SSP poll. The original version of this was shit, compared to what we have now, so I understand. This is going to be a killer project, and with the New Central Library only a block away, this could be quite the high-design little area of the city!

Yeah, the transformation between that initial proposal and what we see now is pretty staggering. That first version looked like total crap.

I'm still a little miffed how little effort Jean Nouvel put into the proposal.

It should only be a few weeks until structural steel work begins. First week of may probably.

Let's all just start calling it Cantos and make it catch on.

Potential here with the design, and I like that this one happened mostly from private donations, but still have higher expectations for the Central Library.

Big budget, international starchitect, tie-ins to Stephen Ave, lrt capsule, flexibility in floor plate size/design due to the nature of the building, potential mixing of uses. Hoping we get something a bit outrageous here.

Yeah for sure. The Library has a budget well over $100 million larger than the NMC I think.

As far as naming goes, I'd rather it be called the Canadian National Music Centre, but as an alternative, National Music Centre is fine. A more simple and direct name like this conveys its importance and uniqueness a bit better.

Having both Canadian and National in the title is kind of redundant. They both imply the same thing.

Myself, I would've preferred something like Cantos Music Centre.

Dumb question, but does 'Cantos' mean something or stand for anything?

$75 million for this came from government. $25 from each level I think.

Cantos means songs in Spanish. Canto = song, Cantos is the plural form.

If I was a tourist coming to visit Calgary, I would find National Music Centre more appealing. It makes it sound more official and exciting.

A canto is also one part of an epic poem.
