The south end of famous Palm Drive, seen here many times, is just past the Hooker house in the top shot...

Guessing the above Packard sign would have been on the outside directly above these two building openings.

Probably not.

But - Packards were on La Brea (a few blocks north of Wilshire).

Per this "1931" Neon seems to have be de rigueur in this LA neighborhood.

Thanks FredH, that worked!
At first my images were squished, so I adjusted the ratio, and now everything is copasetic. No more jigsaw images!

And Pepito was unhurt?

Note to all: I no longer let any clown drive my Packard. (Same goes for the Tesla, especially near water.)

What was on this land prior to the 1950's temple? Was there an earlier Mormon temple? A school? Something else? Just open land?

The Harold Lloyd Movie Ranch used to be there.

To add the corriganville's info:

Historic Aerials' earliest image for that area is 1952, and appears to show the beginning of the temple's construction.

Historic Aerials

USC have this aerial view which shows the completed temple and surroundings in 1954.

1937 Sanborn Map; where the Temple building is now (lot 24245) looks like a separate property from the movie studio. Could the house near the lower right corner of lot 24245 have been an old ranch house?

Nice post on Packards. The cab show above is actually a 1939-1941 Checker Model A Cab. With a front end that you could spot a couple of blocks away!

That's cool!

I read a little further in the book of Westwood (parts found on Google), and discovered Janss Investment Co courted film studios to build in Westwood, and Lloyd and Fox built. Part of Lloyd's ranch was sold after the Great Depression to LA Unified Schools, which built Emerson Jr High school in 1937 (covering 10 acres behind the Mormon Temple).

This aerial was noted as "1928" in the Westwood book, but it already shows the Emerson school, so it's probably 1938:

(movielocationsplus.com)

The property was purchased in 1923 where John Wolfskill (Wolfskill Farm) had built a home in 1913, before selling 3,000+ acres in 1919 for the development of Westwood.
I'm going to guess the frat house on the Sanborn map is Wolfskill's 1913 home.

The strange looking rear roof was called the ''Landaulet". It could be opened by the driver from his front seat by a lever-wire device. I did read there is only one of these models left in existence.

The strange front fenders were made that way to prevent accident damage. The car itself was very long lasting...500,000 miles or more was just getting started with these vehicles. A private person could buy the Checker but it was rare.

Thanks for the update. I did not recognize this car other than it appeared to be purpose-built and assumed (wrongfully) that the source had superior info. Looked like it was designed to handle heavy loads on very "uneven" pavement. Not the most attractive set of wheels on the '39-'41 roads. Given to the British as part of Lend Lease?

Could this front end have been inspired by a character from the '36 version of Flash Gordon?

First neon sign in U.S

Can't recall my source right now ( I have hundreds of books) but supposedly La Brea Packard dealer's neon sign wasn't only the first neon sign in L.A, but first in U.S.

Somebody visited France, saw a neon sign, and brought the idea to America.
Something like that.
Feel free to correct me if your sources are better than mine.

Hey! Being Mormon myself, I'd love to know the history of the temple, Hoss!
