I swear that has to be 30 years worth of mold/mildew/dirt. I've never seen them clean it in all my years here.

That being said, I just drove by the ZaZa.....Holy Smokes, that brick facade is hot! This is going to look amaze ballz when it's complete, even better than the renderings. Maybe cuz sleek looks better in renderings than old school brick, etc?

Count me in as liking the Hobby Building. I like how much of an odd ball it is. It just needs some retail.

I agree. I mean look at the Pickle building on 9th street. It looks amazing (particularly if they power washed that too...), but the only problem is besides M-F 9-5:00, it's completely dead. It could have retail, or anything else going for it. But I suppose government buildings rarely if ever have that. And if they do, it's just something like a coffee shop.

The Pickle Building is alright. I suppose it's neat that it's an example of architecture from that era, but I've never paid much attention to it. It's just kind of there. I will say one thing. Austin Proper's facade is sort of a throwback to that of the facade on the Pickle Building.

I doubt any retail would ever be headed for the Pickle Building, though, being that it's a federal building. I do wish the post office could at least be replaced. It's one of the most disruptive buildings to downtown's urban landscape.

Love the Pickle building! Alas, it is indeed a fed building and now security prevents interaction.
I mean..... when the post office was actually open ...( and I'm sure you remember ) ... and the street went thru.... and you could use the plaza it was a different story.
Post 9/11 it has become the big road block it is .

Still no pics or job openings or booking info on the ZaZa master site, but the Houston Memorial City location, which just opened, has a lot of familiar features:

Okay so....that's the exact same building for all intents and purposes.

Ayup. Only Houston's front is Austin's back.

The brick makes the Austin ZaZa look so much better than the Houston one.

I hope they have neon/LED lighting around the top like that. Something I wish we had more of.

Love love loving the brick facade. I like the brick color of this one more than the one in Houston. Can't wait to see how they're gonna incorporate the Gingerman facade at the bottom.

I was downtown Saturday, too, doing a round of photos. If you get the chance, see this building in the late afternoon. That reddish brick really looks great in the sun.

We need more buildings like this. I just spent the weekend in downtown Dallas. What a great urban experience. Dallas has a lot to look up to, and I don’t mean wealth. Clearly we will never have the charm of older buildings like many older cities, which makes me root for more buildings like this. This from a modernist.

I know this is sacrilegious in an Austin thread. But the Frost tower looks like the top of a supertall that was sliced off and placed on a mismatched parking podium.

From that angle, the pedestal destroys what could have been. I agree with your assessment.
