This makes a lot of sense.. the city was given this property.. its got the roooms etc they need for mental health care as well and no neighborhoods are really affected by it. Plus its in a location where homeless will actually use it.

old VA facility

most of that building is/was parking - only floors 9 and 10 were for medical services plus the pharmacy was on the 1st floor - the homeless usually don't have cars so will they convert all of that parking space?

I doubt that they will convert anything: its just being used for additional parking in the neighborhood I presume. i like this plan because the buildings arent really suitable for other uses and they can quickly be operational. Seems like the best solution at this time.

I don't think there are any renderings ... it says design work will take the rest of spring

This is personal opinion and some wishful thinking, but although the NOLA skyline has seen very little change in the last few decades with only a couple of new towers being built, there are basic things that could be done to improve its appearance. In particular, what comes to mind is the Tulane University Building on Canal near I-10. This building could use refreshing. I’ve seen it done in Houston, where an older 1970’s brown masonry building was cleaned then painted white making it look decades newer. Doing this to the Tulane Building, 1010 Common and a few others downtown would brighten up the aging skyline and the appearance of downtown. It would also make these towers look decades younger. The Tulane Building would look similar to the hotel that was proposed for 1148 South Peters if cleaned and painted. Any thoughts? (The picture posted of the Tulane Building appears to have been taken when it was newly built.)

Even just LED lighting would help dramatically change look. Think of the aloft hotel.

Night lighting, if used correctly can definitely improve the building’s appearance. The Tulane Building and a few others can use some help for both day and night. However, night lighting is a balancing act that can either make or break a skyline. If used too much or with excessive color, it can start to look tacky. If you’re interested, google search “skyscraper lighting”. It’s amazing the variety of lighting there is now for new buildings and older classic designs. It’s much more than just lighting up the rooftop. A lot of thought and a little money can do wonders.
