From Gulf News:

"Dubai: More than 60 families are now living the personal vision of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, after moving into their Palm Jumeirah homes.

Six years after Dubai's rulers commissioned master developer Nakheel to add 78km to Dubai's coastline in the form of a colossal palm tree, 100 villas and 650 apartment units have been handed over to owners and are awaiting occupancy.

However, residents have faced a lengthy wait for the keys to their dream homes. Nakheel originally slated handover for May 2006, then put the date back to November. All units in the 20 Shoreline Apartments buildings will be delivered by this May, say Nakheel officials, adding that it will have handed over up to 4,000 villas and apartments by the end of the year."

Yeah I thought continents would have been cool but the island design brings:
- owning your own island and not just a piece of land
- (which brings) privacy

How can you compete with that ?

Well then for owning your own island they should make a seperate area for that. The way they are creating "the world" looks incredibly stupid with all those islands, does no-one agree? I feel like I'm taking CRAZY pills here!!!!

^ It's definitely not turning out what people thought... so far.

Maybe when it nears completion it will look more like what people were expecting, rather than looking more like a mess.

Major, MAJOR redesign for this:
I like this masterplan much more (doesn't look very good from space but who cares about that, road layout, etc seems much better) but as usual I question how viable such a massive project is (yes I know it'll take ages to build but still)

Pics by Imre.

Palm Jemeira Tunnel Artwork

Here is some of the artwork found in the Palm Jumeirah underwater tunnel, which is now fully submerged under water as they are still in the process of removing the cofferdam.

So now that the Palm Deira had been redesigned, you think they will change the tiles to mach the current design?!

I wonder what would happen to these Palms if a tsunami striked this area.

What would happen to anywhere when a tsunami striked? Don't forget these are higher than mainland dubai so in case of a disaster like this or rising sea levels main dubai will be flooded before these.

Cleaning out my old folder and since nobody has updated in a while (especially the Waterfront/Marina thread), I might as well throw it in here:

Nakheel's New New Island Development

Dredging contractor Jan De Nul announced back in December 2006 that Nakheel had awarded them a new contract for a new island - called New Island!

It's to be reclaimed 50kms out into the Gulf in 20m deep water and is to be crescent shaped.

In order to be built, the island will require:
~ 3 dredging vessels
~ 1 stone dumping vessel
~ 1 positioning pontoon
~ 29 million m³ of sand
~ 3 million m³ of rock
~ US$115 million (422, 380,000 dirhams)
~ 27 months to complete

Work started on the project in December 2006 and, according to the JDN Press Release, the island's "primary function is to provide shelter for recreational vessels".

So far, the project isn't showing on the Nakheel website.
