Around my school(WPI) they're pretty much all just regular houses that happen to be frat houses. Only one of tehm happens to stand out from the regular housing stock; It looks to be built in some sort of modern style.

FSU, I think you'll find two things here...

first is that the 'greek' system at schools isn't real popular here (for likely a wide variety of reasons)

AND

that the houses you've shown aren't architecturally interesting in really any way. They might model themselves after a certain style here and there, but in general they aren't unique or innovative in any way.

I'd be curious to see a greek house that's actually architecturally innovative or an historic example of a particular style. But bloated and poorly proportioned neo-colonialism is just kind of blech...

Wow - I couldn't agree more. My company develops Greek replacement housing projects on campuses across the US and this is the biggest struggle we have - balancing the Alumni's desire to simply re-build their old house, with the desires of today's student population. Occasionally we ge the opportunity work with an innovative design. The attached rendering is a small house that we will be breaking ground on this spring at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH.

The frat houses here at Tulane aren't really too distinctive, but I've always been impressed by Fraternity Row at Maryland - a huge crescent of identical red-brick buildings with a large common between them:

I think UM was trying to contain all the debauchery to a confined area.

only pic I could find of IIT's modernist frat houses.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/9322775@N08/1209632661/

they were designed by Mies Van der Rohe. I'm sure they were nice in the 50's but they kind of need a renovation.

My old house at the University of Oklahoma Beta Theta Pi two blocks from campus and on the National Register of Historic Places (built in 1928):

The house across the street, Kappa Alpha Theta:

and next door Chi Omega:

OU's North Greek (where the above houses are located) is nice in that it's integrated into an existing older neighborhood on the west side of campus. You could get to class in less than 5 min. which is closer than the dorms.
