I think the problem with that project was that he wanted to tear down several historic buildings. If the footprint excluded those, I'm sure a high-rise would be possible there.

It was about the historic buildings, not the highrise.

does anyone know what's going on at 1600 Magazine? it was Dat's Grocery up until about a week ago, then was sold and now has a chain fence around it. i think the two lots behind it were for sale at one point as well.

I would guess something dense and mixed use. In my opinion the site is too small for a gas station, and that's a conditional use anyway. I think it's highly unlikely that use gets approved in this location - that'd be two steps forward, one step back in the minds of the area neighborhood associations.
