I don't know exactly what your gripe is, but the new-build Safeway in the West End is as large as the City Market at The Post. And the two towers on top added 330 homes to the neighbourhood. And if you want to get dinner you can just walk down the street to any number of restaurants along Denman.

The Safeway at Robson and Denman could certainly be redeveloped into something more, but redevelopment along Robson hasn't progressed much past Cardero yet.

The Bay Parkade site is the only one that comes to mind for a new large retail component, but there's an alley through the site and the built form will depend on whether they are allowed to close that off and/or build above it.

**************

The Post finds its footing as downtown Vancouver's newest anchor
https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/the-...arket-quadreal

It should be called a concourse. It doesn't have a skylight, so it's not really an atrium.

Quote:
In addition to the now-opened Starbucks, the atrium itself is [sic - will be] further activated by two food and beverage tenants within bar-like island spaces, with smoothie/bowl bar Oakberry expected to open in Spring 2024 followed by Deville Coffee in Summer 2024.

As well, in Summer 2024, bubble tea cafe Gong Cha will open an additional location in downtown Vancouver on the Hamilton Street side of the building — opposite of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

Also later in 2024, Brazilian steakhouse restaurant Fogo de Chao will open their first Canadian location on the north [sic- south] side of the complex, fronting The Post’s West Georgia Street plaza.

...

But the largest cluster of public art will be found indoors within the Homer Street atrium. Just in time for last week’s opening, a large heritage mural by Orville Fisher from the building’s former Canada Post era is now prominently positioned on the south end of the atrium. It depicts the different modes of transportation used for mail delivery in the 1950s.

Towards the centre of the atrium on the bank of escalators, some of the mailboxes previously found at the Canada Post public service office at the northwest corner of the building have been reinstalled as public art as an additional reminder of the building’s past uses.

However, the atrium’s final finishing touches — perhaps the space’s most impressive features — through the installation of extensive public art are still to come.

Burns says the atrium will be the new permanent home to the 22 vintage neon lights originally restored for the Museum of Vancouver’s years-long Neon Vancouver Ugly Vancouver exhibition. The Post was originally set to receive three neon lights from the exhibition, but a decision was made in 2022 to move the entire heritage neon light collection to the complex to allow the public to enjoy the many lights in a new way for many years to come. The neon lights will be suspended from the ceiling, and installed onto the large wall surfaces.

City Market was closed today around 12 when I walked by. The fire department's hazmat team was on the scene. Starbucks was open though.

Exactly. Only a large building podium can achieve all these.

Totally not comparable. Westend has been a NIMBY central for the longest time, and hence why it's so rundown in many parts.

It's a shame that The Post didn't install a battery backup system, rather than a diesel generator. The battery option is starting to get used now, with Google replacing the generator in a Belgian data centre in 2020, and now expanding to other locations. Where the generator (and the diesel tank) end up on an upper floor, the advantages would seem to be even greater.

Maybe it's a footprint issue? There were some other generators on other levels so I assume this is to service the office tower?

This article said they still need a diesel backup at that data centre since the backup battery only has a two hour supply.

Some Vancouver company is working on flow battery technology:

Some Vancouver company is working on flow battery technology:
Yes, in 2020, because the Google battery backup was their first installation, they had a diesel generator as well. Since then they've expanded the battery capacity, and they're using it to balance the grid as well. The intention is to replace the diesel generators in all their facilities by 2030.

There are dozens of businesses working on battery storage systems, including flow batteries, so I'm not surprised there's one here. I'm sure generators will be obsolete in the medium term, and maybe sooner.

the issue with battery back up, which is there is a prolonged outage? you can refuel diesel, natural gas, propane. you cant really recharge a massive battery bank easily.

i guess you could have solar. but thats going to be a lot of solar. and in our region its mediocre. the point of back-up power is to be fully reliable. not iffy.

The first of the atrium food tenants (other than Starbucks) has their sign up. Lee's Donuts, supposedly opening April 1st.

Deville and Oakberry just got their building permits in the last few weeks.
