Dozens of Saskatchewan Country artists have been converging on Saskatoon over the last few weeks with performances leading up to the Canadian Country Music Awards at SaskTel Centre this coming Sunday.

Just a few of my favourite Saskatchewan Country music artists, but not limited to, and in no particular order are:

Jackie Guy, from Yorkton (same home town as Samara Yung, see post on previous page) has worked with Nashville producer Dean Miller and Emmy award winning Joel Evans videographer for 'Bridges' video.

Bruin, from North Battleford & a sixtime national qualifier in Tae Kwon Do, has performed in Country music's biggest stage outside of Tennessee.. Tamworth Music Festival, New South Wales.

Mabaleka, fresh off of touring Ireland earlier this Summer, the Saskatoon brothers have had accolade of Best Music Video at Ottawa International Film Festival for 'Crashed Upon the Wave' official video.

Elly Thorn, from Saltcoats, SK, honed her musical talent on Norwegian Cruise Lines & has also acted in tv series Rabbit Falls & Corner Gas and stage adaption of Evita at Saskatoon's Persephone Theatre.

Aces Wyld, the Saskatoon band has headlined shows not only in Saskatchewan but also across the country including Canadian Music Week in Toronto last April.

Justin Labrash, from Lumsden,SK just north of Regina & short distance down valley from Craven Country Thunder festival. Justin having worked with Tom Jackson & Nashville associates, has released four singles to date, 'Hooked on You' hit the #4 spot on the 'most active indies for all genres' DMDS National Charts in Canada earlier this year. Justin has toured coast to coast.

Amanda Hagel, from Saskatoon & a finalist in CBC Searchlight, in 2017 Amanda did a 'Women of the 90's' Cover Song series. One of my favourite covers of Lady Gaga is by Amanda.

The Music Newfoundland and Labrador Awards nominees have been announced. I'll italicize my choice.

Album of the Year

This year, album of the year is a ****ing powerhouse. Every single one of these artists is a HUGE deal here, but I have to go with my all-time favourite band, The Once. However, I suspect Janet Cull has this. Her being nominated is like Beiber up for some award that only teenage girls can vote for.

Chris LeDrew – Art of the Confessor
Earle & Coffin – Wood Wire Blood & Bone
Ian Foster – Sleeper Years
Janet Cull – Real Tough Love
Steve Maloney – The Memory Game
The Once – We Win Some We Lose

Alternative Artist of the Year

Category VI
Gavin Simms
Informants
Steve Maloney
Town House
Young Manics

Celtic Traditional

Rum Ragged is amazing live. There's just so much passion and raw talent that doesn't need a studio's finesse. I think if enough of the voters have experienced it, they'll win by a landslide.

Colleen Power
Cordeen
Dave Penny
Doug Dorward
Matthew Byrne
Rum Ragged

Country Artist of the Year

Could not care less. But choosing Steve Maloney since I've heard of him and don't even consider him country.

Bev Allen
Steve Maloney
Victoria and The Lyricist

Entertainer of the Year

This is a tough one because it's everything, music, shows, interactions with people around town. The Once is still my favourite but in this category I think I have to go with Kubasonics because they're just so fun. But it's another strong one - I know and enjoy every nominee.

At my neighbourhood local:

Video Link

Hip Waders
Ian Foster
Janet Cull
The Kubasonics
The Once
Waterfront Fire

Female Artist of the Year

Janet Cull all the way. The only other remote possibility is Rachel Cousins.

Colleen Power
Janet Cull
Maria Cherwick
Melanie O’Brien
Rachel Cousins
Victoria Doyle

Folk/Newfoundland Roots Artist of the Year

This is the tough one. I'm choosing The Once out of subjective preference, but it could legitimately, objectively be any of these.

Adam Baxter
Christian Howse
Ian Foster
The Kubasonics
The Once
Weight of the World

Group of the Year

This one I have to vote for The Novaks. Their return was a BIG ****ING DEAL here. It was the water cooler talk for a couple of weeks. I think that hype, and joy, will overshadow all the rest.

Earle & Coffin
Informants
The Kubasonics
The Novaks
The Once
Town House

Instrumental Artist of the Year

Rozalind has this in the bag.

Fretboard Journey
Rozalind MacPhail

Jazz/Blues Artist

This is a fringe category, I imagine Hip Waders will take it as they seem bigger.

Earle & Coffin
Hip Waders

Male Artist of the Year

I think it's between Ian (political, separatist) and Steve (artistic, thoughtful), and I think Steve will take it.

Gavin Simms
Ian Foster
Luke Tremblett
Matthew Byrne
Mick Davis
Steve Maloney

Pop/Rock Arist of the Year

Clare Follett
Janet Cull
Mick Davis
Rough Hands
The Novaks
Land of the Lakes

Music Video of the Year

Adam Baxter – “Poor Cold Hungry Happy” Dir: John Pike
Doug Dorward- “Morag and Binker’s” Dir: Phil Maloney
Ian Foster – “Feels Like It Wants to Rain” Dir: Ian Foster
It Could Be Franky – “Always” Dir: Matthew Thomson
Kellie Loder – “Boxes” Dir: Tom Cochrane
Land of The Lakes – “On These Days” Dir: Duncan De Young

Rap/Hip Hop Artist of the Year

Unfortunately, I don't follow this genre (locally, though I love it internationally) and, if they're actually born and raised here, I guarantee they're awful. So, whichever of these is a relatively recent Newfoundlander or Labradorian, take it.

Adam Jenkins
JYAY
Lee Fitz
Tony Delicious

Rising Star of the Year

Rachel Cousins is not that new, so I think Rough Hands will take it. They've been making some pretty impressive headway in local airtime, media coverage, etc.

Clare Follett
Doug Dorward
Melanie O’Brien
Rachel Cousins
Rough Hands
Town House

Songwriter of the Year

This is another stacked category, so voting subjectively for The Once.

Clare Follett
Gavin Simms
Janet Cull
Rough Hands
Steve Maloney
The Once

Electronic Artist of the Year

If it's not Elling, we riot. Although, Repartee should've been nominated (they moved to Toronto this year to try to get bigger, and I suspect that's part of this. Didn't do them any good, though, their songs only became hits here).

^ In Saskatchewan any Celtic music around usually just mixes & morphs with Country to just be classified as Roots, Folk &/or Country.
Jamaican Dance Hall & Reggae would have a bigger following here as compared to Celtic.. for music coming from any island off the Atlantic..

That said, Kristan Couture from Saskatoon with a Celtic influenced folk/pop debut album 'You Just Fooled Me' was released a year ago. She has played in Cross Canada tours, at Folk Alliance in Kansas City and at Edmonton Folk Fest playing along with UK based folk/pop group Bears Den. Kristan has also worked with Nashville songwriters including Steve Mitchell, Rich Karg, Jesse Labelle.

Kristan plays guitar but is also classically trained in piano & violin (fiddle) and has performed with other Saskatchewan artists including Amanda Hagel, Elly Thorn, Aces Wyld (see my previous post), Erin Hill (see post previous page)...

The Western Canadian Music Awards were this last week in Edmonton and the Big Winner of the Awards was Andy Shauf from Regina.

Andy received awards for Pop Artist of the year, Songwriter of the year and Recording of the year,
Andy plays all the instruments in his latest album recording 'The Party', with the exception of the strings, handled by Colin Nealis.
Andy recently finished his 2017 American /European concert tour, but he's back to London and Paris for concerts next month.

As much as I love Andy Shauf's directed video productions, its his live performances that I like the most.
Here's a couple live video recordings from NYC and from Chicago.

Plus another of Shayla Souliere's songs from previous album..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hud7aYn0gR0

..This week i'm spotlighting Shayla Souliere

Splitting her time between home city of Regina and LA, Shayla's career in music took off when she met Grammy-award nominated producer and songwriting Alex Cantrall.

Shayla's latest single 'Over' released a couple months ago features Pimpton, also from Regina, SK

Pimpton, as mentioned above & from Propagate Records Regina, will be releasing new album and is on his Canadian tour started this month.

All of Pimpton's songs are generally explicit but here's one pg rated soundcloud song I found called 'Hometown Heroes' featuring Brock Prentice.
Brock is also from the '306' & member of one of my fav bands from Regina 'Desert Island Classic'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLkNo9jkT70

Plus a Pimpton video from year ago (Explicit)...

One Bad Son from Saskatoon, just back from their German tour in September, are releasing their latest album Made In the Name of Rock & Roll next week and beginning their Canadian leg of tour in a couple of weeks.
Apparently their first single from album Raging Bull has already hit #1 on Canadian Billboard Rock Charts. Nickleback and Arkeles are the only other Canadian groups to do so this year.

What do The Sheepdogs do in off season when they aren't globe trotting doing concerts in Kazakhstan, of all places, like in May of this year?

...On a lark, brothers Ewan & Shamus Currie from the band formed an alter-ego called 'BROS' this past year to exercise their retro 70's funk/blues side.

Video Link

As far as The Sheepdogs are concerned, the group has been touring USA/Europe this last year & all over Canada in the Summer. I have friends in San Francisco that have been to one of their concerts in the Bay Area & they made the connection that The Sheepdogs & I am from same province.

The Sheepdogs headlined the CNE in Toronto a few weeks ago along with fellow headliner & Saskatchewan born & raised Colin James https://youtu.be/uVFT_4tJ2P4?t=35

here's a couple live performance videos from The Sheepdogs, one from Audiotree and one from Choose-the-Cover RollingStone.

Today, Friday the 13th, The Sheepdogs' latest, Changing Colours is released.

Hey Rosetta are finishing their St. John's and Toronto shows, and then breaking up. Amicably. But, still... fuck.

******

CBC got Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to vote for the best song from this province over the past 25 years. Fables "Heavy Away" won (I'm SO glad traditional won) but, some of the finalists (after several rounds of voting) I was happy to see rank so high, because I love them.

hmm, I don't know where it would be, presumably in Eastern Ontario since OBS's concert date before & after Corbyville is in that part of that province, i'm sure a 10second google search would pin point the place though.

So I'd been hearing about a guy making waves in Saskatoon music lately, shooting up in prominence this past year in the city's club scene. I had to reserve judgement until I saw his performance for myself last week …but he's legit.

Alex Bent + the Emptiness (the Emptiness pseudonym is a range of artists that back Alex's studio & live shows) I seriously hate having to do the vocal comparison to Bieber but he has the chops to back it up, Alex's sound & demeanour is closer to be like Zayn though with introspective, pensive verses.

Otherwise, when Alex sings cover ballads like 'Heaven in Your Eyes' he totally reminds me of Natasha Bedingfield's brother Daniel from a few years ago i.e https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfEpx6dVQbc

We Were Lovers has already done a remix of Vanilla Blue, if you like a dancier/circuit version of the song.

You're right, I should've googled it. It was amalgamated to Belleville Ontario.

Song/video written for book release of a Science fiction novel set in the future?

Annalee Newitz, a California author transplanted to Saskatchewan, commissioned local Reginans, musician Marshall Burns & filmmaker Sunny Adams to do the honours.

Annalee explains, Autonomous, the novel and song represents the blend of the past & future she's seen on Canadian prairies.
"This is a province that has world-class universities and high-tech farming right alongside small towns with small schoolhouses. Go to a bar in Saskatoon, and you’ll find scientists and poets drinking alongside farmers and workers from the oil fields." Autonomous is about how the future comes to the prairies, " Tomorrow doesn’t come just to the Tokyos of the world. It happens in Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan'.

Marshall Burns is a very diverse singer/song-writer, cofounder of Regina musical group Rah Rah, performing in North America and Europe,
here's a song from Rah Rah's last album.
