Metro-North opening temporary rail station in Milford
Frank Juliano
Updated 5:34 pm, Saturday, April 25, 2015

In preparation for work to begin on the Devon Bridge, Metro North workers construct a temporary train platform for passenger transfers between the Waterbury and New Haven lines in the Devon section of Milford, Conn. on Thursday, April 23, 2015. Photo: Brian A. Pounds

MILFORD -- Metro-North Railroad's temporary Devon station, which will be in use from May 4 into early October, is exactly that: temporary.

The open-air platform sits at the Y-shaped junction of tracks where the Waterbury Branch meets the main New Haven Line. There's no canopy, no restrooms, no ticket machines and no parking.

The state's Rail Transportation Plan, covering 2012-16, mentions a permanent Metro-North station in Devon, but this is not it.

But the two, four-car-length platforms -- one on the branch and one on Track 3 with a walkway connecting them -- are a key piece of a major upgrade to the Waterbury Branch.

Note that the Proposed Permanent Station which is part of the Waterbury Branch upgrade will not be located on the Wye but few hundred feet east of it.

Studios Planned Above Crown Street Garage

The empty space above the parking garage next to BAR restaurant will soon become studio and loft apartments for lease.

The City Plan Commission Wednesday night reviewed and approved Metro 260 LLC’s site plans for the 12-unit, 9,325 square-foot, second-story space, which was originally designed for parking. The apartment complex does not yet have a name and lawyers said they did not know the estimated price range of the apartments.

NEW HAVEN >> Members of the Downtown-Wooster Square Management Team were shown a proposal on Tuesday from a development group looking to transform the old Harold’s Bridal Shop location on Elm Street into a five-story apartment building featuring ground-level retail space.

The site plan for 19 Elm St., unveiled by representatives from MOD Equities, calls for the creation of a mix of 46 one bedroom, two bedroom and duplex units.

Attorney Gregory P. Muccilli of Shipman & Goodwin LLP, counsel for MOD, said the building is envisioned to cater to the “kind of people who desire to walk, bike or use the train station to commute to work.”

The preliminary plan features 21 on-site parking spaces along with 40 secure bike storage spaces.

“We envision balconies with borrowed light, a rooftop deck and a common space where residents can congregate,” Muccilli said. “Our proposal for 19 Elm St. creates a desirable residential development in keeping with the neighborhood feel.

‘Bold’ Vision Calls For 19-Story Hotel-Apartment Building In Derby

A rendering of what the hotel could look like from the south (Main Street looking toward the Derby Green)

by Eugene Driscoll | Aug 4, 2015 2:22 pm

Could a 19-story hotel-apartment combo be the spark Derby needs to revitalize downtown?

Seymour architect Joseph Migani and former Derby Mayor Anthony Staffieri think so.

Staffieri and his family own Plaza on the Green, a 70s-era retail/office building (with a standalone bar/restaurant) on about an acre of land on the south side of the Derby Green at 101 Elizabeth St.

Migani is considering purchasing the property and redeveloping it into a combination “boutique” hotel and “millennial” housing.

It’s an estimated $50 million project, Migani told members of the Derby Planning and Zoning Commission during an “informal” presentation July 21.

Does anyone have a rendering of the new grad student residences being built by Yale at 272 Elm Street? All I've found online is this single image from some random wordpress:https://designvisualization.wordpres...-grad-housing/

EDIT: ugh how can I make the image smaller?

New Haven - Tweed airport

This is absolutely fantastic news. There was litigation a couple of years ago to lengthen the runway at Tweed. My dad lives in Bridgeport and as much as I like Amtrak, I hope there is a one-hour DCA - New Haven flight instead of the 5 1/2 hours it takes on Amtrak.

Tweed New Haven Airport announces $100 million expansion and the arrival of Avelo Airlines. Here’s what it means for New Haven, the state and air passengers

By KENNETH R. GOSSELIN
HARTFORD COURANT
MAY 06, 2021

Tweed New Haven announces major expansion. (Patrick Raycraft/Hartford Courant)

"NEW HAVEN — Tweed New Haven Airport, a backwater in the state’s modern air transportation network, on Thursday announced that the airport is embarking on the boldest expansion in its 90-year history, with a $100 million vision that includes a new terminal and longer runway, plus the addition of a fledgling, low-cost carrier.

“This is part of something a lot bigger,” Gov. Ned Lamont said at a news conference at Tweed announcing the details of the plan. “This is a really important regional airport, the most important region of the state. I don’t just say that. New Haven is the crossroads for our region, the crossroads going forward.”

Cranky Flier has a good post about why Avelo will be successful with its New Haven hub.

Zooming In On Why Avelo’s New Base at New Haven Should Be a Winner

May 10, 2021

"Avelo only launched last month, but as expected, it has now announced its second base which will start some time during the summer. This one — New Haven on the south shore of Connecticut — is way on the other side of the country from its first Burbank base, but I actually like it better. To understand why, we need to zoom in. So, let’s start by looking at the big picture and work our way down.

First we can just look at the obvious measure, population density. You don’t need this map to know that New York City is the epicenter of population density inside the Northeast, which is the most dense part of the country.

That’s great and all, but for those outside of the Northeast, where exactly is New Haven? It’s on the Connecticut coast, about a third of the way in from the New York border to the Rhode Island border. And when you look at Connecticut overall, that’s a very good place to be..."

5 things to know about the expansion of Tweed-New Haven Airport

By Kenneth Gosselin
Hartford Courant
Sept. 26, 2021

This rendering shows a planned 70,000-square-foot terminal built on the East Haven side of Tweed-New Haven Airport. (Image courtesy of the Hartford Courant)

"HARTFORD — Tweed-New Haven Airport is ramping up efforts to establish itself as Connecticut’s second major airport alongside Bradley International, with its eye on air passengers from the New Haven area and the southern half of the state.

A fledging low-cost carrier has made Tweed-New Haven its East Coast hub and will begin flying nonstop routes to Florida later this year. And, on Thursday, the airport won a crucial approval from the city of New Haven, a significant step toward a longer-term, $70 million expansion that could add a $45 million terminal by the fall of 2024, possibly sooner..."

New Haven, CT officials ink 35-year Union Station deal: ‘It’s a game-changer’

Mark Zaretsky
Dec. 21, 2021
New Haven Register

"NEW HAVEN — U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., called the new 35-year deal between the city, state and New Haven Parking Authority to secure and guide the future of historic Union Station “a game-changer” that will be “a platform for transformation” for decades to come.

Gov. Ned Lamont, who joined Mayor Justin Elicker, state Department of Transportation Commissioner Joseph Giulietti and others for the agreement’s signing, said that in recent years, “I think we’ve learned how important railroad service is to our future” — and called New Haven “the transportation hub of our state.”

U.S. Rep. Rosa L. DeLauro, D-3, who cut her teeth trying to keep another big transportation project — Interstate 91 — from cutting her Wooster Square neighborhood in half, said it was nice to see one being used to reconnect neighborhoods, in this case, the Hill to Downtown..."

Bridgeport

I will have to take some photos the next time we are there but there is a 300-unit apartment development under construction on Canfield Ave in Bridgeport. This is maybe a quarter mile from the Fairfield Metro train station.

There is also a 52 unit residential building planned for 3115 Fairfield Ave in Bridgeport. Unfortunately, the local NIMBYs are out for blood with this one (not enough parking, it should be three stories instead of five, etc...). Bridgeport was hemorrhaging people and jobs for decades. It is unfortunate these NIMBYs are privileged enough that they don't have to worry about being able to afford a home or whether there is adequate tax revenue to support public schools.

These NIMBYs would be perfectly happy having this vacant lot instead.
