Smile Somewhere different to go in Edmonton

Next weekend I will be heading up to Edmonton from the Okanagan for my annual party weekend with friends. We usually go to Whyte Ave. for a few drinks, but we have another friend coming up from Calgary who has done the Whyte thing several times. Last year we went for Chinese food downtown and then went to the Lux lounge and a couple of other places, before returning to the familiarity of the south side (O'Connor's Pub). Where "new" can we go downtown? We are old farts (late 40s, early 50s) so we don't want a loud club, but a nice pub or lounge or two where there might be some ladies for my single friends. (I'm happily married). I've heard something about a 1905 pub. Where is it? Are there other good watering holes near the 1905?Thanks in advance.

1905 is ok.....just a regular pub though. Right across the street from their is Red Star, which is usually good. Just down the street (109 and Jasper) is Fluid - great lounge, but if you are looking for a place with people in your age bracket this certainly is not it. Other suggestions are Sherlock Holmes downtown, or if you want to go further down Jasper, Suede is a great spot.

Overtime is good for the older crowd. Just south of 104 Ave and, I think, 112 st.

The Metro on 106 st and 103 ave might fit the bill, as would Martini's on 109 st and 100 ave. It's a nice suprise to realize that we actually have choice now when it comes to bars downtown.

To be honest, Suede would probably be the best place. The crowd is much older, nice looking ladies. A great spot overall.

Christ, I started avoiding loud when I wasn't even 25. How the hell do you people have any hearing left?

drinks
-suede - mix of 21 to 50...good food, nice crowd...
-metro - good pool hall with decent menu
-sherlock holmes on rice howard way - great pub
-1905 - decent kind of "cheers" place with big screen for hockey
-ric's grill downtown - nice lounge area of the restaurant

for dinner i would recommend:

-la tapa (99ave 105st) - spanish tapa place
-blue plate diner (104st north of jasper) - mix of everything
-free press bistro (104st south of jasper) - mix of everything
-nikitas - rice howard way - welcome to the med

but overall how about "TZIN" (104st north of jasper) - wine bar and tapas place...older crowd, but awesome host and amazing wine selection.

Ruths Chris has a great lounge. If you feel comfortable sitting there. I know I do - when the Oil are in town. They bring all their girlfriends there

Serlock Holmes, Hudson's, 1905, and Rosario's would be my reccomendations. even though Rosario's is kinda out of the way and can be a pain in the ass to find (if i remember correctly its on 108 ave where it turns into 119 Street...i'm usually a little more then drunk leaving there), its worth it. mixed crowd too.

^I don't in any way think Ruths Chris is the "best" steak (especially since most of it is not Alberta beef ), but it is still unique in western Canada, and is very good (though, haven't been to the Edm one yet)...

It would be a great option if you want some good quality food.

On the same topic, Zilla and I will be in Edm for the rest of the week starting tomorrow, .. for those familiar to Calgary I'm into casual non-sports pubs like Drum & Monkey and Hop n Brew, or interesting lounges like Ming.. what might be comparable ?

This city needs another sidetrack cafe. There is a lot of musical talent here, and we need more venues to showcase their talents. Since the Sidetrack closed, going to see independant musicians just hasen't been the same

Sweet, we're heading to the canada heritage foundation conference, so they'll take care of the historic sightseeing, but we're on our own as far as the contemporary fun so that's very helpful.

Does the club formerly known as New City Suburbs still exist?

Hit up martini's to watch the game with TIMMY!!! and Ginty with his buddies. A pretty solid place. They share the kitchen and menu with 9th street bistro next door so there was no shortage of options...and $13 sleeman pitchers.
