That idiot Colley-Urquart (sp) was on the news tonight bemoaning the presence of so many bars in the beltline, and heavily implying that's the cause of this recent crime. All that 2am mayhem on the streets as bars empty out, and so on.

First, sweetheart, the victims are not cooperating with police. That's not random drunken violence, that's gang-related (regardless of whether or not the cops want to call it that). Innocent victims of random crime do not tell the police to F off.

Second - why the hell does every bar close at 2am anyway? Allow them to set their own hours, and you won't see hundreds of drunks on the streets at the exact same time.

Why are the obvious answers so damned hard to figure out for politicians?

Couldn't agree more! Why do the politicians all think closing them earlier will solve the problems?

I think more bars might be a better solution too, that way they won't all be so jam packed every friday and saturday night.

Are there really that many bars on 17th ave anyway? People are commenting like it's the new Electric Avenue, except instead of having the same number of bars in one block, it's spread over 14 blocks.

You know the dumbest thing about all this? everyone is focusing on 17th, and there was only one incident there (AFAIK). Why not look at bars in general, there was a shooting outside Desparados, someone set fire to Ranchmans, someone was stabbed on 11th, someone was shot outside a bar on 17th SE. 17th Ave SW doesn't really have many problems to be honest.

Personally, I'd rather have them all in one area. Easier to avoid and also easier to police.

Cowboys is coming back this summer isn't it?

I feel bad for people in Arriva, Cowboys Casino is sure to be replete with douchebags, especially around Stampede.

Agreed. Well maybe not ALL, but a nice concentration of bars works wonders.

I first really picked up on this years ago on a visit to Hamilton. It's a, shall we say, rougher city than Calgary. Yet they have this incredibly dense street, closed to traffic, with what seemed like dozens of bars all packed together. People flooded the street all night, open liquor was seen, and (gasp!) it was a pretty tame, peaceful scene. Especially considering the hundreds upon hundreds of staggering drunk people. The very visible and very large police presence kept everyone from being too douchy.

Various articles:

Weekend of violence in DT Calgary
Quote:
On Sunday, an early morning shooting sent two people to hospital, there was a stabbing on 11 th Avenue and a disgruntled customer tried to set Ranchman’s nightclub on fire.

“We are certainly concerned there is violence on the streets — in front of busy licensed establishments that are full of patrons — that include guns,” said Calgary police Duty Insp. Craig Skelton.
Beltline bars a mix for disaster
Quote:
After the city’s latest shooting on 17th Avenue S.W., Ald. Diane Colley-Urquhart said city bars are a “mix for disaster.”

However, police say the problem is bigger than that.

“The incidents that we’re seeing aren’t in bars,” said deputy police chief Trevor Daroux. “There are more incidents that have occurred outside of bars.”

Police issued the warning on the weekend after five shooting incidents were reported in an eight-day span.
DT bank robbery shuts down LRT
Quote:
Police are searching for a man after the HSBC branch in downtown Calgary was robbed Tuesday afternoon.

After 2 p.m., police were called to the bank in the 400 block of 8th Avenue S.W., said duty inspector Chris Butler.

And yet another ...

http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/Ca...171/story.html
Quote:
Police were called to the The Roadhouse, 840 9 Ave. S.W., at 2:15 a.m. on reports that two men had been injured on the sidewalk after leaving the bar.

“At this point, we’re considering it to be a random act,” said Det. Garth Kowalyk.

I'm surprised there aren't more stabbings at Roadhouse. The fact that this happens so rarely, even there, demonstrates how safe Calgary really is. Thanks for this, Suburbia.

Too bad the news articles don't report on how many of these people live in the suburbs.

Here's a list of grow houses that have been busted in Calgary. Looks like the majority of them are in the suburbs. I personally know of someone who moved out of Copper Field because he was living beside a grow house. The cops were aware of it, but they like to wait a few months before they bust them so they can get a mature crop. Meanwhile the neighbours are at risk of fire and exposure to dangerous chemicals.

Some of the trends are pretty obvious ...

Random acts of violence, often with pretty nasty collateral damage, happens more often in the inner city (such as the recent roadhouse example). Incidents involving prostitution and street level drug trafficking are two more examples where inner city is king. Public drunkenness and pan handling turned violent are more examples where inner city is king. Domestic violence is going to happen more where there are couples, so areas more likely to have singles have less of an issue and places with couples / families have more. Grow ops, often run by those with the inner city distribution networks, no doubt choose out of the way places. Often that is way out 'edge of town' burbs (like copperfield) and even commuter communities (like chestermere). Regarding risks of fires to neighbors, there is no doubt this is an issue beside grow ops, but more and more this is an issue with density, in particular row housing and low/mid-rise construction (the one by the talisman centre across from the stampede grounds was an epic example).

What happened at Roadhouse wasn't even remotely "random." Fight among patrons moves outside at 2 in the fucking morning and two guys get stabbed. How in the fuck is that "random"?

I can't think of a single instance of "random" violence in the inner city in the last several years. There was that poor man who was murdered by skinheads in the NW but that wasn't inner city unless you're really stretching the definition. The guys who drove around the city on stabbing spree a few Stampedes ago did end up killing a woman at 17ave/11St sw but that was almost certainly not random either as they were targeting drug dealers.

If you're talking about completely hapless, innocent, in the wrong place at the wrong time victims, yes, Jose Neto Ribeiro was tragically blinded three years ago, but the even more horrific examples (a man shot to death outside a restaurant, a woman raped and murdered near and LRT platform) weren't inner city.

Hmmmmm, a "crime in Calgary" update.....who could it be from? Suburbia maybe? bingo! lol.

The inner city just keeps getting better. Had an awesome weekend down here again. It pays to be so close to EVERYTHING including both rivers, old churches, 1 thousand restaurants (exaggeration) and tree lined streets (with actual people on them).

Wow!

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...-downtown.html

Quote:
Calgary police sent out 10 units Monday morning to break up a large street brawl that erupted near a downtown lounge.

About 100 people were involved in the fight outside of the Ubu Lounge on First Street southwest just before 2:25 a.m., according to Calgary police.
http://www.660news.com/news/local/ar...brawl-downtown

Quote:
Duty Inspector Paul Stacey tells 660News, when closing time rolled around, it appears a hockey game broke out outside the downtown watering hole.

"There were some reports from the people who were calling it in that there were 150 people that were fighting out on the streets," says Stacey, who says police arrived at the scene just before 2:30am. "And they were using weapons such as belts and bottles to fight against each other."

"Our own officers estimated that there were approximately 100 people and pockets of fights all over the place,"

Just like to point out that the alleged suspects in that brutal attack that recently happened in the Beltline reside in the burbs.
