Las Vegas - Highlights 3

Las Vegas highlights photographed in April 2017:
I posted previous threads of highlights of the city; 'Las Vegas - Highlights' was posted in 2009 and 'Las Vegas - Highlights 2' was posted in 2011, as well as focus threads 'Las Vegas - CityCenter Las Vegas' and 'Las Vegas - The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas'. This new thread from a recent visit features projects I had not seen previously or new ones built since I last visited in 2010.

Smith Center for the Performing Arts:
This is located on the edge of downtown in the Symphony Park area, a former large train yard that is slowly developing. The center's design is an Art Deco homage in contrast to the bold modern forms of nearby projects.

Discovery Children's Museum:
Adjacent to the Smith Center is this museum that relocated from the city's central library.

City Parking Services Garage and Pedestrian Bridge:
The bridge crosses over railroad tracks to connect downtown with Symphony Park.

Las Vegas City Hall:
This is on the edge of downtown, as is the building that formerly housed it.

The Linq Hotel and Casino, and Promenade with High Roller:
This Strip hotel is a drastic redesign of the former Imperial Palace, and an outdoor promenade shopping and dining promenade has been added on one side with the world's largest ferris wheel at its terminus.

The Park, Park Theater, and T-Mobile Arena:
Another Strip addition is this linear park between New York New York and Monte Carlo hotels and casinos, ascting as a promenade from the Strip to the new arena. Along the way is a new theater attached to Monte Carlo.

Aureole at Mandalay Bay:
Here are several images of a restaurant with a 'wine tower' that has been redesigned since my last visit to this hotel and casino.

Silverton Hotel and Casino Interiors:
Various themed bars and restaurants are inside this hotel and casino a few miles South of the Strip, including a large aquarium tank.

Bass Pro Shops:
Attached to the Silverton Hotel and Casino is this large outdoor equipment chain store.

Nevada State Museum:
A newer addition to the Springs Preserve - the water district's collection of attractions on land West of downtown - is this cultural and natural history museum.

Clark County Wetlands Park Nature Center:
On the Eastern edge of the metro area is a large park in a natural wash that has many manmade retention ponds and this nature center.

Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center:
Several miles West of the metro area is this Bureau of Land Management park with dramatic rock formations and a visitor center with great interpretive exhibits.

Enjoy!

Nice pictures! I was expecting this to be the highlights Downtown, but it was good to see some of the entire metro area, from the new arena to Red Rock Canyon.

xzmattzx, there really hadn't been much change in downtown since my visit in 2010, not enough to fill a whole thread anyway. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, is built around the Smith Center and its neo-Art Deco style.

Saint Tick (Tick Segerblom/NV legislator), as I call him, shamed the recent Legislative session in Carson City by saying: Do you realize Las Vegas is the last big city to have an art museum?

And? With the Governor's approval, a provision was made for $10 million seed money to help get an art museum off the ground, to be located near the Smith Center/Symphony Park!

Yes, quite the embarrassment to a city with all the rich people moving/living here due to no state income taxes. Venetian owner Adelson thinks nothing of writing out multi-million dollar checks to defeat state marijuana ballots, get his favorite politicians elected, and no money for a museum in his home town?

A light rail route for the first light rail line for Las Vegas has been approved, but construction isn't expected to begin until 2019, completion in 2022. And, no, it won't be running down the Las Vegas Strip, it will go from the Airport to UNLV, down Maryland, to DT, then west to UMC.

IMBY, I am glad to hear that an art museum for the city is in the works, I am a fan of museums! The ones I have been to in Las Vegas are the two at The Springs Preserve: Origen and Nevada State Museum (pictured in this thread) and both are very good. Also, the Atomic Testing Museum is an excellent small museum and is a Smithsonian affiliate. I mourn the passing of the cheesy Liberace Museum that was in a strip mall, that was good for some laughs as well as celebrating a very talented player. As for art museums, I never went to the Guggenheim Hermitage that was at the Venetian Resort, and it closed in 2008. The other Strip art museum is the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art which I have not seen but is still operating at the Bellagio Resort. Near the Strip on the campus of UNLV is the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art, which is a collecting museum so it serves the purpose as the area's "serious" art museum along with the Bellagio's for now. And then there is the Discovery Children's Museum, also pictured in this thread, which I did not enter but it is the first to be in Symphony Park and could be a compliment to an adjacent art museum.

I see that the T-Mobile Arena and Park Theater pictured here are already getting much use, including lavish productions by Cher...classic Vegas in new facilities but I wonder which older theaters will be empty if there aren't enough ticket buyers to go around?

That's some nice shiny architecture. It's great to see some of the non-casino developments - thanks for sharing.

Yes it seems the non-casino developments will continue to be more interesting for awhile since casino developments that look likely to happen will take much time to finish...such as Palace Station expansion, Wynn expansion, and Resorts World.

Yes that's what we all call it automatically...Lost Wages! Although when I have visited I've always stayed in the cheapest places possible since I'm never in the room anyway. I would spend more on a hotel only if it was to be a pool vacation since some of them have impressive swimming and wading areas.

Nice to see the architecture of Las Vegas without a casino. At least none of the top 5 largest casinos in the world are located in Las Vegas, but their number per person is too large. Sometimes I imagine a city without a casino, and so much more I like it.
